Hero Bulletin: What is a Hero?
What is a Hero?
Hero: “characters that, in the face of danger and adversity or from a position of weakness, display courage and the will for self sacrifice – that is, heroism – for some greater good, originally of martial courage or excellence but extended to more general moral excellence.” — Wikipedia
This site, developed after too many conversations about “how can I help?” is here for just that purpose: to help the heroes. While my own resources are severely limited, I do have one asset: blogging expertise and experience with social networking. This essentially translates into my new mission for 2009:
To help others by bringing attention to those who can best put it to good use, by profiling some small-scale hero who is helping to make real change in the world.
We all have minor personal heroes, such as our parents, a friend from way back, or even the postman trudging through the snow, as well as major personal heroes, along the lines of Martin Luther King Jr., Ghandi, or even Obama. These are not the types of heroes that I’m talking about now. I’m talking about modern-day individuals who make a real personal sacrifice to help others in need.
Here are some examples of what I call “small scale” modern heroes:
- Someone running a food kitchen on the poor side of town.
- Someone volunteering in the Sudan.
- Someone running a language or literacy program for poor immigrants or refugees.
- Someone working with orphans in Iraq.
- Someone who runs a homeless shelter.
I’m looking to profile individuals, not organizations, although most individuals are affiliated with some official charitable organizations.
