What's Great About Menopause? by Amirah
Menopause is a very powerful time in a woman's life. But, the average American woman has heard nothing but jokes and complaints about "The Change" during her entire life. Menopause seems terrifying primarily because it is a definite sign that a woman is getting older. Getting older obviously reminds us of our own mortality. But is there anything good about menopause?

The time prior to menopause is perimenopause. This stage usually starts around age 45 and can be 8 to 10 years the most challenging time in a woman’s life. The hormones struggle to find balance and can create symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, decreased sex drive, irritability, depression, etc.

Could hot flashes, night sweats, etc., be nature's way of helping women? Is this time to prepare for the power of menopause? Might it be a way to burn off old debris, purify, cleanse the body and suppressed emotions?

So many women go through "the change" but we, as women, are not talking about it. Oprah did a show on this last week and mentioned that many suffer in silence. It wasn’t so long ago that women were thought to be ‘crazy’ and institutionalized for expressing symptoms of irritability, depression, hot flashes, night sweats, sleepless nights, etc.

Imagine feelings of shame, guilt and hurt are processed through a woman's body each month during her menses. Little by little, healing takes place to the degree she is willing to open up and free herself. When a woman prepares to stop shedding blood, and periods become irregular, her body finds other ways of releasing suppressed unprocessed emotions.

Did you know women in other cultures don’t experience menopause like American women? And curiously enough, in many of these cultures, women experience far fewer and less severe symptoms of menopause.

Asian women report far fewer hot flashes than western women do.
Only 5% of Chinese women report menopausal symptoms.
Indian women don’t experience depression, dizziness, and incontinence.
Mayan women in Mexico report no menopausal symptoms except irregular periods.
In Africa, women in Botswana report no menopausal symptoms but increased sex drive.
In Australia, 70% felt good natured and only 4% felt depressed.

Not all women experience the uncomfortable symptoms of the perimenopausal phase, especially women who have lived happy, healthy and balanced lives, processing their emotions fully and releasing properly with each monthly cycle.

Other women simply process life differently. Some women have been known to breeze through perimenopause often without even knowing it, and slip gracefully into menopause where there is no more shedding of blood, but an increased sense of self, personal power, wisdom and freedom.

However, most women have a tendency to bury negative emotions to protect other people's feelings. If a woman reaches the perimenopausal years and she is not yet willing to open up, she usually experiences what many call a dark night of the soul, deep, deep depression. It's nature's way of saying stop and self-reflect. It’s time for personal soul searching. If she does not, she becomes more irritable, depressed, hard to be around, and less tolerate of others. She may even feel like she is going crazy.

The best way to release these toxic emotions and more gracefully move into menopause (your power), is through self-healing work and learning to love yourself and others through acceptance of the unacceptable.

Once a woman reaches menopause, usually around the magical age of 55, the bleeding has stopped, the door to wisdom is opened wider, self-realization is at hand and personal power is more readily expressed. A woman who has fully processed any old baggage and set herself fee, and loves herself enough to be herself, will now fully enjoy the power of menopause. Women have been known to start new careers, new businesses, start non-profit organizations to give back, begin a new life with their newly found power!

A woman experiencing the power of menopause is more sensitive to the energies and happenings around her, both physically and spiritually. Her intuition becomes sharper and more wisdom is revealed. She is more focused, centered, grounded, spiritual, wiser and more beautiful than ever. There is nothing more beautiful than a woman standing fully in her power. And this is what’s good about menopause!
