Talk Back: Did Seth MacFarlane hit or miss at the Oscars?

The reviews are in -- and they are not kind. As critic Tom Shales put it -- about the Oscar audience: "Listen: a billion people are throwing up." But then again, even in the moment,MacFarlane expected it, even reading  tweet about how bad he was. If only Captain Kirk had beamed down earlier! Maybe he would have commanded MacFarlane not to sing the "Boob Song," backed-up by L.A.'s gay male chorus. Hey, ABC's goal may have been to attract more young, male viewers. Who are not remotely interested in red carpet fashion -- and Broadwayesque show numbers. But -- we heard jokes about boobs, domestic violence and bulimia. Kinda sad, really. Because MacFarlane is talented. He can sing, dance -- dazzle. But, his jokes -- meant to be "edgy" -- left one critic crying, "four hours of unfunny!" like this joke: "Daniel Day-Lewis is not the first actor to be nominated for playing Lincoln. Raymond Massey portrayed him in 1940′s Abe Lincoln in Illinois.' I would argue, though, the actor who really got inside Lincoln's head was John Wilkes Booth." Maybe Oscar should figure out what it wants to be before choosing its next host. Does it want to be an awards show? A comedy? A variety show? Classy? Edgy? For goodness sakes choose! Then maybe, a talented guy like Seth MacFarlane can be -- himself.
