Sam Dunn: What's the Deal with Gaahl you ask.
What's the Deal with Gaahl you ask.
I've come across a few people asking about that epic moment of satire in 'Journey, where Sam is interviewing Gorgoroth front man Gaahl in his home in Bergen Norway. At one point Sam inquires as to what it is that motivates him to do what he does, to which he pauses, sips from his glass of red wine and states very confidently, "SATAN". At this point in the film, the view is undoubtedly over come with some level of hysteria. I know I was. So what's with this guy? Is he really serious about himself in this way? Hell Yes!
I'll keep this short but from what I understand this is how it all went down. Sam, Scot, Martin and the Banger Film crew traveled to Gaahls residence eager to interview this very controversial and maligned Norwegian Black Metal Mogul (had to..). Crew starts to set up cameras, lights, etc... Gaahl steps in and insists that everyone move to the wine cellar where the room is light by candlelight only. "Bloody Hell". So off they go (think HELLWICTH => down in the basement Awaits the TORTURE CHAMBER!!) Okay you might not remember them, anyhow, the crew having had to recalibrate everything to compensate for the new lighting scenario set up and starts rolling. Sam and the crew demonstrate how very respectful they were in accommodating Gaahl and continuing on with the change in scenery, although it did create one of the more memorable moments in the film for sure!
Everything you saw was set up and improvised by Gaahl as it happened.
I 'hear' that during the premiere in Bergen, this scene was met with similar hilarity around the room. All but one... Ghaal, remained in solitude in the darkness of the room unmoved by the light atmosphere that surfaced during that scene. Shirking somewhat.
So Ghaahl is very much a self directed individual, motivated to remain steadfast to his image, and by all means, to survive as he has in the tumultuous arena of Norwegian Black Metal as a Native Norwegian is a huge undertaking.
I'm pretty sure this is as it happened, although Sam will surely let me know if I went wrong anywhere. Naw...
Don't forget to head over to the Banger Films Inc page where we'll be posting most of the stories from the Flight666 Premiere this month.
Peace!
