Kennebec Journal: Flood watch posted for Skowhegan
SKOWHEGAN -- The National Weather Service has posted a flood watch along the Kennebec River in Skowhegan.
Robert Higgins, director of the Somerset Emergenchy Management Association, said this morning that the river already is above the flood stage of 35,000 cubic feet per second atd Weston Dam, but has posed no problems -- for the time being. The Kennebec is expected to crest at 38,000 feet at around midnight, Higgins said.
"The smaller streams bear watching," Higgins said. "There's more heavy rain expected on Tuesday, and that's what we've got to watch the most. The ground is pretty saturated."
Higgins said that Twin Rivers Campground on U.S. Route 2, not occupied at the time, is one of the areas in town that floods first. The Elm Street area above the dam also bears watching, he said.
