Tulsa Performing Arts Center: Summer Takes the Stage at the PAC

Summer Takes the Stage at the PAC
The Drowsy Chaperone -- at the PAC thru Sunday.
It's summer at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center, when many of Tulsa's arts groups have completed their performance seasons and the entertainment focus turns toward the PAC's three Second Street theaters and SummerStage.

However, it's an unusual summer in one respect: Broadway. In both June and July, the PAC hosts Broadway productions, culminating in a four-week run of Wicked. But before that, on June 2-7, Celebrity Attractions presents a delightful show that charmed Broadway audiences and won five Tony Awards in 2006 — The Drowsy Chaperone. This musical within a musical is perfect breezy summer entertainment. Tickets are $15-$55.

The rest of June's lineup is all SummerStage, taking place in the Williams, Doenges and Norman Theatres. On June 5 Crossroads in Concert launches SummerStage with a trio of musicians performing Irish and Scottish tunes. Tickets are $15. Another opening-weekend show is Talent, Incorporated on June 5-6. This 90-minute scripted musical, featuring some of Tulsa's most celebrated talent, is about a one-woman talent agency and her talented yet dysfunctional clientele. Tickets are $15; table seating is $20.

Meet the Beatles when Metropolitan Arts Theatre's Claire Kifer returns to SummerStage with Let It Be on June 6. Tickets are $15 and $20. Trio Spiritoso presents a Sunday afternoon performance, La Musica Per Tre, on June 7, showcasing chamber music from the 18th and 19th centuries. The trio is composed of flute, oboe and cello. Tickets range from $10 to $15.

Theatre Pops, one of SummerStage's founding members, presents a David Mamet double bill on June 11-14. These one-act plays concern a young couple (Sexual Perversity in Chicago) and an aging pair of friends (The Duck Variations). Recommended for mature audiences. Tickets are $10; $8 for students and seniors.

Light Opera Oklahoma (LOOK) presents three major works in June and July: Lerner and Loewe's My Fair Lady (June 11-July 5), Gilbert and Sullivan's The Gondoliers (June 14-July 1) and Stephen Sondheim's A Little Night Music (June 25-July 3). Tickets for each of these musicals are $25-$29, with discounts available for students, seniors and children under 12. Cabaret shows highlighting the vocal talents of LOOK cast members are slated for June 21 and July 5. Tickets are $20; $25 for table seating.

Fantasy Plaid Camp, presented by Tulsa Repertory Musicals, takes the stage June 11-14. Fans of the show Forever Plaid will like this musical comedy that involves Forever Plaid wannabes and songs from the original show. Tickets range from $15 for children to $25.

Award-winning actress Vanessa Adams-Harris stars in Big Mama Speaks, a one-act vignette about the 1921 Tulsa Race Riot. The piece was written by well-known author Hannibal Johnson. Tickets to the June 19-20 performances are $10; $8 for seniors and $5 for students.

Sweet and Hot Productions returns to SummerStage on June 19-20 with Onstage at the Midnight Social Club. This all-song production takes place in Kansas City, 1934, and spotlights local divas Cindy Cain, Pam Van Dyke Crosby, Annie Ellicott and Rebecca Ungerman. Recommended for mature audiences. What if Bob Wills and Woody Guthrie, two of Oklahoma's most famous music celebrities, had met? That is the premise of Time Changes Everything, a one-act play written by former Tulsa World entertainment writers Thomas Conner and John Wooley, and directed by Vern Stefanic. Brad Piccolo and John Cooper of the Red Dirt Rangers portray the two legends. The show is June 25. Tickets are $15 and $25, with discounts available.

On June 26 SummerStage welcomes JAI HO!! KRSNA, a classical, folk and Bollywood-style program of dance from India performed by the Sanskriti School of Dance. Also that evening is Clark Teen Laughing Matter Improv. Tickets for each are $10. Tulsa Community Theatre Youth Conference is a free event on June 27. This one-day theatre workshop is open to youth ages 12-18.
