Why “The Kindle” maybe the new iPod

The Amazon Kindle has the same traits as the Apple iPod did. It’s a device that becomes a platform for content. Publishers are slow to move on it but should welcome this – rather than drag their feet much like the music industry did. It took a technology innovator like Apple to revolutionize the music industry. Amazon, The Kindle, has the ability to do the same for content.


The easier you can allow a consumer to consume content - it will result into higher consumption – which will generate higher revenues for the industry and content owner. So, everyone still gets a piece of the pie. And eventually that pie gets bigger.


An added benefit for the kindle, it’s better for the environment. It helps transition us to a more paperless society. And not to forget, for the struggling publications/newspapers that are trying to cut costs to survive in today’s digital society – it gives them access to distribution.


Think 10 years ahead – wouldn’t ever every student and environmentalist be happy to see that we don’t need to print millions of copies of textbooks and carry them around.


It’ll give a whole new meaning to a back pack…

      As a former manager for Media News, I was trying to get the company to start offering all it's newspapers on Kindle. At the time, they said "no, why should we? We have such a big readership right now..." well, each little bundle of newspape...rs is from a whole tree, a tree that could have provided 18 people with enough oxygen to last their whole lives... Now that all the newspapers owned by them are starting to go under, I'm not going to say I told them so. It was me against a bunch of old fogies who didn't want to let go of the past and embrace the future. An example of income for one newspaper (these are actual numbers): $15 million a year in ad sales, $5 million a year in subscription sales. Ads can still be viewed on the Kindle, but with more ad options. If they had only made an attempt when I had suggested it, they would not be struggling now.See More

    • Prabhjit Singh Like every new media, it won't kill off the older, traditional ones, bur complement them. Books will remain, but the Kindle can help as an all-in-one with several genres served as content in one platform: drama,political, fiction/non-fiction, historical, etc... shd be great to research and referencing a multitude of courses on the go.
