AVATAR ORCHESTRA METAVERSE
11am-12noon, SLT

Avatar Orchestra Metaverse (AOM) performances feature virtual instruments designed for each composition within the Second Life platform. The instruments are played using Heads Up Displays on the computer screens of artists from around the world making this unique live music together in real time.

PROGRAM

FRAGULA (June 2007)

Ccomposed by Bjorn Eriksson (aka Miulew Takahe), Solefea, Sweden
Instruments and Animations designed and built by Andreas Mueller (aka Bingo Onomatopoeia), Regensburg, Germany

The piece is a play with words “fragment”, “fragile”, “fragula” and “Dracula”. The visual part of this piece is made from small and big movements and animations of avatar while having the sound sack being colored in different colours. One of the major ideas about this piece is to have the orchestra to wander from a fragile and fragmented digital synthezised sound texture into a more analog acoustic and not so fragmented sound texture, and then come back to where it all started. This is aurally symbolized in the granulated synthezised sounds of sine waves, square waves and sawtooth shaped sounds. Also arpeggiated synthetic figures then gradually transforms into the sounds of an old harmonium with unprecise playing. There is also a transitional sound in between the digital and analog sound sources where a time stretched harmonium sounds gets this role. There is three groups of players in this piece as the different sounds forms chordal sound textures. Bingo Onomatopoeia/Andreas Müller made these programming of both sounds and animations for HUDs.

RITUAL (JULY 2009)

Composed by Tim Risher (aka Flivelwitz Alsop)
HUD and circle built by Flivelwitz Alsop (Durham, North Carolina), particle shapes designed by Sunn Thunders (Aspen, Colorado)

Ritual is a highly ritualized work, all the actions are using gestures together, to create a single unit. I was trying to present an Ur-ritual, symbolizing basic patterns and ideas in all rituals. The sculptures we wear also reflect this - built only using triangles, circles and squares. The music uses small fragments of chant-like sounds which combine into a large whole when played.

PwRHm (2008)

Composed by Humming Pera (Tina Pearson), Victoria, BC, Canada
Instruments by Bingo Onomatopoeia
Particles and Receiver Globe by Goodwind Seiling
Commissioned by Deep Listening Institute

PwRHm gets inside the sonic possibilities of the building blocks of electricity by playing with the relationship between the North American 60 Cycle Alternating Current and the European 50 Cycle Alternating Current in honour of AOM's international membership. PwrHm also uses the breathing rhythms of the live individual performers, spread across 2 continents, to determine the dynamic between the relationships, sounds and movements of the virtual avatar players.

The main instrument sounds in PwrHm are 2 sets of 7-second sine tones tuned to the harmonic series of 50 Hz and 60 Hz. Soloist sounds are 3 - 7 second samples of more complex square waves and tuned and modulated field recordings of electric motors. All of these sounds are put together in 4 HUD (Heads Up Display) configurations. The globes held by the players are 'receivers' that emit differently coloured particles according to the particular instrument they each play, and the pitch and volume of each sound as it is played. European players emit yellow - orange particles from their receivers while the North American players emit violet-purple particles. The solists' receivers emit shooting blue light.

WEE NO KRESH

Composer: Andreas Müller (aka Bingo Onomatopoeia)
Instruments designed and built by Andreas Müller

The Onomatophone was created out of the idea to build an instrument with real 3-dimensional sound. The result is an instrumnt that separates the control-interface from the sound-generation: six spheres sending out audio fly right through the audience, thus giving everybody a unique, continuously changing mix.

W.N.K. is not only a song I made for AOM but also a proof of concept that loop-based/rhythm-oriented music can be arranged/performed/mixed live in SL. Hence the dance/Drum'nBass loops. I simply wanted to see if they play back in sync in laggy live situations. These drum-loops are taken from the web or were freebies from synthesizer magazines; of course I processed them and did not use them unedited. The other loops were (like the rest of the samples used here) created from my library of field-recordings: There are, for examples the heating of a flat I once lived in for a while, a metal lid covering the public water-systems at the place we go to for flying kites and riding sleigh, the mouse-clicks of my old Atari and so on.

Technically, it as a project for learning the coding of LSL (Linden Scrpting Language), I had to create an interface controlling the sounds as well as the movements of the spheres - plus visual feedback for the audience (and player) as the buttons change color when clicked. After a few performances I changed the concept a bit and removed the controls from the in-world instrument (only left the visual representations) and moved this functionality into a HUD. I had had a hard time during performances telling the audiences not to click the buttons all the time and not to stand between me and my instrument - something nobody deliberately did in order to annoy me, but because nobody is acquainted with an Onomatophone. Violins, Pianos and Guitars are well known and nobody dares to touch them without invitation, but this is not the case with an experimental instrument where it is not even obvious at first sight that this IS an instrument.

In order not to make this a solo-piece for me, I extended the instrumentarium and created a special HUD for Miulew to do the vocal/solo role, so the general arc of tension for the whole song would not have to rely on me alone remote-controlling loops. The rest of the orchestra has HUDs to add percussive spice to the whole thing.

AIRA JUN (Kassel, Germany)
With Cypress Rosewood, 3-4pm SLT

Aira Jun, in Second Life is known as Elf and Wizard, but above all he is Musician. He has been playing in SL since 2006; in Real Life for over 20 years. His performances are focused on old style jazz, some real book songs and his own compositions of bossa and swing. His latest additions of Sinatra classics will sweep you away into a world of glamour and romance. You are almost guaranteed to leave one of Aira's concerts with a smile on your lips and a song in your heart.

He has worked in the Music Industry for many years as a performer and a producer, leading and joining various music projects and bands on stage and in the studio. Over the years he has performed and produced 3 CD's of his own original compositions. He began his music career at the age of 15, learning first the guitar and adding, over time, bass, drums, percussion and didgeridoo. Add to this his unique and decidedly smooth vocals, and you have an exceptional sound, which will keep you coming back for more.

The audio-tech side of his career has seen him working on professional studio-productions, both band productions and radio / cinema advertisements as live in local theatres and even grand halls. This training gives him a finely tuned ear for quality sound which can be heard in his instrumental numbers.

Coming from the traditional upbeat-funk of T.O.P and James Brown and alike he has been moving into Jazz over the years. The classical experience at the grand halls inspired him to start working on his first piece of classical music, and this finally lead him to orchestrated Jazz wich is now part of the program he performs in Second Life.

THE CHANGHIGH TRINITY SISTERS FIRESHOW OF LIGHT, LIFE AND LOVE
With music by Cypress Rosewood, 1-2pm SLT

Green dancer: Lisa Ra, Portugal
Red dancer: ClaudiaMarja Magic, Germany
Blue dancer: Melvin Starbrook, Holland
Yellow dancer: Yman Juran, Denmark

We are four sisters who have created and designed a very unique and extremely powerful circus acrobatic fire-dancing show––a mixture of highly spiritual music and cosmic speech blended with universal insight, wisdom and philosophy.

We perform on rotating trapezes, high wire, podiums and rolling balls. We fire dance on walking elephants and do many unique acrobatic animations, all colored by effects of many different kinds which are created, scripted and available inside Second Life, such as fire balls, particles and poofers, laser , sparks, smokes and other kinds of realistic light.

We like to see living live performance art supported and it is my sincere hope and inspiration that somewhere or somehow we can all guide and inspire each others in our mutual interest in uplifting and enlightenment of the SL culture.
