Auf Wiedersehen, Pet.'s Notes
View: Full | Compact
Barry is a reserved, sometimes tedious, blundering Midlander with a large array of useless knowledge and the self styled “Prince of Trivia” and whilst not sending money home to be deposited in his account at “The West Bromich and District Building Society” spends his time working on his motorbike.
Although he is sometimes “a bit of a radish” and irritating to his workmates, they still are akin to him and look to him as a source of knowledge for diffusing tensions by solving arguments and disagreements.
In Series Two we see him preparing to and then eventually marry Hazel, however we get the impression that this union will not last. He also has his own building firm.
By Series Three, Barry is a successful entrepreneur and the success he always believed he’d be. He is married to the beautiful and glamorous Tatiana; however, she is not all she seems.

Bomber is a barrel-chested giant from Bristol, who despite his numerous infidelities to his wife whilst in Germany is a good soul, who puts his family first.
He is a natural protecter due to his stature and is often the reason "the lads" avoided just as many scrapes as they were actually in!
By Series Two we see that he has also been down on his luck and has been involved in wrestling in order to make ends meet.
In Series Three we learn that Bomber is now a widower who embarks on a relationship with one of the Native American ladies he meets in Arizona (citation needed).

A convicted Pyromaniac from Dodge City (Kirkby, Liverpool) Moxey did not arrive until the second episode of the first series and was only admitted to the hut as he had a dartboard, but soon installed himself as one of the gang.
By Series Two, he has been back in jail and is on the run from an open prison in Wales. During this series we see him don many aliases in order to avoid detection from the authorities.
In Series Three, we see him in trouble again; however this time it is with local villain Mickey Startup.

Wayne is a happy-go-lucky, Cockney sparrow that to begin with our three Geordie lads are not sure how to take.
His main two concerns in life are music and chasing skirt the latter of which he will go to any ends to get it.
Towards the end of Series One he meets on-site administrator Christa, whom he falls completely in love with and gives up his womanising ways to be with. He remains in Germany after the rest of the lads return to England to marry.
By Series Two when Wayne returns to the UK, he is alone. We later learn that he and Christa are no longer together and are to divorce (although it later transpires that she is also pregnant). It’s not long before Wayne is back to his old ways.
Tragically, Gary Holton who played Wayne died just before the completion of the second series and therefore does not appear in subsequent series’ of the show. (See Wyman).

Our first encounter with Oz presents him as a rude, inconsiderate, harsh, rough Geordie oaf who was out for himself and showed little or no remorse for his abandonment of his wife Marjorie and their son Rod.
He is chauvinistic attitude towards anything foreign (i.e. not from England) and appears to have few diversions or interests outside of Newcastle United and drinking.
When we meet Oz again in Series Two, little appears to have changed – he still has a feckless attitude towards his family (which he eventually loses) and at the end of the series he wins the Spanish lottery and shows his sensitive and caring side by lavishing gifts on his friends.
By Series Three, the brash and xenophobic Oz we knew in Germany in Spain has more or less subsided and a mature and less violent, Oz is in his place. He rekindles his relationship with his son Rod, who is now gay (which Oz ultimately embraces).
In Series Four, he falls for a Cuban ballet dancer named Orfelia Ortez.

He married “his Brenda” young and is blissfully happy. Throughout Series 1, he constantly yearning to get back to the home and life he has left behind and writes and calls at every opportunity.
He is honest, faithful and to some degree naive – this probably comes from him having to work since he was sixteen to support his mother and family after his father’s death and not seeing much of the world outside of Tyne and Wear.
As the series’ progress we see Neville develop more independence from Brenda and become less under the thumb.

We first meet Dennis when he is entering Germany to look for work and is in the middle of divorcing his first wife, Vera.
Later in the series, he meets German on-site secretary Dagmar, who he regretfully leaves to give his marriage to Vera and life with his children another chance.
In series two, he's back in Newcastle upon Tyne divorced and living with his sister Norma. After his split from Vera he got into debt through gambling with local mobster Ally Fraser and ended up working for him as a “gofer” to pay off his debts. He is currently seeing a receptionist Christine Chadwick.
By the time we get to series three, he is down on his luck again, is twice divorced and is driving a taxi for a living.
Despite all his troubles, he is always the one that the rest of the group look to for guidance and direction.
