The Rock-afire Explosion: PRODUCTION NOTES

A little under a year ago, Alabama native Chris Trash brought The Rock-afire Explosion back to life with homemade videos of the band performing current songs. Inspired by the success of Chris' YouTube videos, the Window Pictures crew began formulating ideas for the production of "The Rock-afire Explosion" documentary and shortly thereafter contacted Chris about his possible participation in the film. Chris agreed, and after working through some logistics, it was time to start filming.

Chris Thrash. Phenix City, Alabama. November 2007

Filming began in November of 2007 in the small town of Phenix City, Alabama. We met up with Chris and immediately immersed ourselves in his town, his life and surroundings, and, of course, his museum-quality Rock-afire Explosion band. Over the next week of filming, much was learned about Chris and the story behind his love for the band. The lush hills and colorful landscape of Phenix City provided the perfect backdrop for this simple man's story.

We left Alabama with hours of footage and even more ideas. Not until we started piecing it all together did we realize that the film would need to stretch beyond that small town in rural Alabama. Our next stop was Orlando, Florida. We didn't know it at the time, but what we would find there would make the story of The Rock-afire Explosion more exciting, more complicated, and more captivating than we could have ever imagined.

Aaron Fechter. Creative Engineering. Orlando, Florida. May 2008

In May of 2008, we traveled to Orlando, Florida to meet Aaron Fechter, the man who designed the animatronics, provided the voice talent for many of the characters, and essentially fathered The Rock-afire Explosion. For a week, we absorbed ourselves in Creative Engineering, the building where The Rock-afire Explosion came to be.

The history we discovered at Creative Engineering was amazing; preserved almost as a time capsule from that day in 1983 when production of The Rock-afire Explosion ceased. There is a beautiful eeriness to the building, and a dusty, yet vivid stillness that has lasted for 25 years. No matter where we looked, there was more to see. From the antiquated board room, to the mask-making room, to the "main showroom" where the robots were originally programmed, to the darkest corners of the basement where old characters went to retire, Creative Engineering provided a stunning backdrop for the story of Aaron's rise and fall. The time spent with the man himself, his stories, and his passion, brought just the right color needed to take the film to the next level.

As we left Orlando, we realized that there was more to be done. We decided that to tell the complete story of the Rock-afire Explosion, we would need to speak to more fans. Our next stop would be Carollton, Texas for a meeting with two of The Rock-afire Explosion's biggest fans.

In early June, we headed up to Carrolton, Texas to meet with Rock-afire super-fan Mike Scherpenberg, and Showbizpizza.com webmaster, Travis Schafer. From Mike and Travis we learned many things about the Rock-afire Explosion, its fan community, the history of Showbiz Pizza Place, and some personal details from these unique individuals. Mike also had some old characters from Pizza Time Theater in his possession. It was striking to see the difference in quality between these old, oversized plush characters, and the intricately detailed Rock-afire Explosion. It was easy to see why people were amazed by the difference in the early 1980s.

With shooting nearing completion, we decided to visit one more super-fan, this time in the small town of Little Improve, Mississippi. With his own "Smitty's Super Service Station" (just like the one behind Billy Bob on The Rock-afire Explosion stage), which houses his own Rock-afire Explosion band, Damon Breland would provide just the right energy to round off our collection of obsessed fans.

Damon's, Mike's and Travis' childhood memories and collective knowledge of Showbiz Pizza Place and The Rock-afire Explosion would compliment Aaron's dynamic tale and Chris' simple story. With the interviews in the can, we headed back to Houston and set our sites on a finished product.

Now in the final editing stages, we anticipate completion sometime within the next month and have very high hopes for the film. Check back for more information and spread the word!
