Georgia Aquarium is proud to welcome its new wolf-eels! The menacing looking wolf-eel resembles a moray eel, but is actually not an eel at all. It is a member of the “wolffish” family. Despite its appearance, this fish is very shy and docile. It does not attack unless provoked. But it can inflict a painful bite with its long sharp teeth. The adult is dark grey to brown in color, while the juvenile is red-orange.

The wolf-eel is native to near-shore rocky reefs and stony bottom areas in the North Pacific from Japan to Southern California. It lives in a cave or crevice where it establishes a den or lair in which it rests during daylight hours. At night the wolf-eel prowls the reef and nearby bottom areas looking for crabs, clams, snails and sea urchins to eat.

Be sure to check out the gruesomely attractive wolf-eel lurking in its den in the Cold Water Quest gallery, presented by Georgia-Pacific.

Georgia Aquarium is bringing guests face-to-scales with an all new emerald tree boa (Corallus caninus) exhibit featured in the River Scout gallery, presented by Southern Company. This slithering creature will inhabit a display filled with lush rain forest greens, a waterfall and even a few amphibious friends – poisonous dart frogs and Amazon milk frogs.

This roughly 6-foot long creature is known for its vibrantly green body color with a white, irregular stripe and white transverse bands or splotches on its dorsal surface. Adults generally range from about 4 to 6 feet in length, but individuals in the Amazon basin can reach 9 feet long. The emerald tree boa is not venomous, but has long curved front teeth that can inflict a painful bite, making it an ambush predator.

Guests can check out this new exhibit located inside of the River Scout gallery next to the American alligator exhibit. In the River Scout gallery, visitors discover a wide diversity of animals found in the rivers of Africa, South America, Asia and also right here in Georgia.

Georgia Aquarium’s Dolphin Conservation Field Station (GAI-DCFS) opened today in Marineland, FL just outside St. Augustine, FL, with a ceremonial ribbon cutting by Georgia Aquarium benefactor, Bernie Marcus and Marineland of Florida owner, Jim Jacoby.

The conservation field station includes research and veterinary facilities, quarantine pools for rehabilitating rescued animals, both land and water animal rescue vehicles and housing for researchers and staff. The team will conduct research, and it will also fill a need for rescue and rehabilitation of stranded animals in Georgia and northeast Florida. After a successful rescue and rehabilitation, animals deemed releasable by National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) will be reintroduced into their respective habitats. Animals deemed by NMFS to be unfit for release will be provided a home selected by NMFS.

The partnership between the Georgia Aquarium and Marineland to open GAI-DCFS was announced May 6, 2008, at the same time the Aquarium announced its $110 million dolphin expansion plans in Atlanta, which is set to open in November 2010.

The Georgia Aquarium has pledged more than $3 million to the care and study of dolphins through the initial contribution to build the facility of $1.5 million and the annual operating costs of $300,000 for the Center. Marineland of Florida donated the use of the land for GAI-DCFS.
