Abbott and its Ensure® Brand Announced as Title Sponsor of the Champions Tour’s 2010 Ensure Classic at Rock Barn
CONOVER, N.C- Officials from the PGA Tour’s Champions Tour today announced that Ensure® adult nutrition shakes from Abbott will title sponsor the 2010 Champions Tour event at Rock Barn Golf & Spa in Conover, North Carolina.
The event formerly known as the Greater Hickory Classic at Rock Barn, which began in 2003, will now become the Ensure Classic at Rock Barn.
Ensure shakes, number one doctor recommended, help people stay healthy and active and provide a source of complete, balanced nutrition with 24 vitamins and minerals.
“Ensure is trusted by people who want to get healthy and stay healthy,” said Matthew Fisher, division vice president and general manager, Therapeutic Nutrition, Abbott. “We’re pleased to sponsor the Ensure Classic at Rock Barn to encourage people to take charge of their health so they can continue to enjoy activities like playing golf.”

The Ensure Classic at Rock Barn will be played September 27 to October 3, 2010, with a purse of $1.75M awarding $262,500 to the winner. Jay Haas is the defending champion and a two-time winner of the event.

Third-grader Kayley Price of Lyle Creek Elementary School in Conover and fourth-grader Samantha Bates of Oak Hill Elementary School in Lenoir were named the winners of this year’s Greater Hickory Classic at Rock Barn Presented by Kia Motors student art contest.
Both Price and Bates will have their artwork displayed on the daily tickets for the 2009 PGA TOUR’s Champions Tour golf tournament at Rock Barn Golf & Spa September 14-20. They each also receive a Grand Prize package that includes the following:
* $500.00 to winner’s school
* $100.00 savings bond for student
* $100.00 Kaplan School Supply gift certificate for winning student’s teacher
* Picture with tournament champion at 2009 event
* Framed ticket autographed by 2009 tournament champion

TICKETS Fore CHARITY invites area charities to help sell daily and weekly tickets to the 2009 tournament scheduled for September 14-20. The full price of every ticket sold will be donated back to participating charities. The initiative creates a unique new fundraising avenue for local nonprofits and allows ticket buyers to contribute directly to their charity of choice with each ticket purchase.
Charities are already signing up to participate in this year’s TICKETS Fore CHARITY program.

2008 Tournament Benefits Variety of Area Organizations
The Greater Hickory Classic Foundation has named a long list of charities to receive proceeds from the 2008 Greater Hickory Classic at Rock Barn Presented by Kia Motors. Each year, the Foundation donates all net proceeds from the tournament to area charities. This year’s contributions total $113,645, bringing the Foundation’s overall donations to more than $700,000 since the tournament’s inception in 2003.
Organizations receiving donations include the following:
Fellowship of Christian Athletes, $20,000 Catawba County United Way, $15,000 Dale Jarrett Foundation, $10,000 Hickory Elks Lodge, $10,000 Hickory Metro Sports Commission, $3,500 Alexander County United Way, $3,000 Burke County United Way, $3,000 Caldwell County United Way, $3,000 Iredell County United Way, $3,000 Piedmont Council Boy Scouts, $2,500 Young Life of Eastern Catawba County, $2,000 Hickory American Legion, $2,000
An additional $11,500 was distributed among eighteen other local charities, including Children’s Advocacy Center, Wake Forest University Leukemia Research Fund (in memory of Guy Hollar), Patrick Beaver Learning Resource Center, Brett’s Ride for Rhabdo, Greater Hickory Cooperative Christian Ministry, Hickory Soup Kitchen, The Corner Table, Safe Harbor Rescue Mission, Humane Society of Catawba County, and nine local civic groups. The total includes previously announced contributions to the Dale Jarrett Foundation through the Dale Jarrett Shootout and also represents donations from the Champions Tour Players Association and the PGA TOUR. It also includes funds from on-site collection efforts for the American Red Cross during tournament week.
“Our track record of giving back has made this tournament an important part of our community’s economic well-being,” said Don Beaver, CEO of Rock Barn Golf & Spa and Chairman of the Greater Hickory Classic Foundation. “Thanks to the participation of our sponsors, our volunteers, and our community, we have been able to help those in need and continue our tradition of giving.”

GHC Announces Volunteer of the Year
The Greater Hickory Classic at Rock Barn Presented by Kia Motors named six-year veteran Harold Shook of Hickory its 2008 Volunteer of the Year. Shook, who has served as a volunteer on the Carts & Shuttles committee since 2003, was presented with a Waterford crystal trophy – a small-scale replica of the tournament's Champions Trophy – during the evening's festivities.
Other nominees for the award, also recognized during the event, include the following:
•Mike Induni of Conover (Transportation since 2003)
•Earl & Freida Jackson of Taylorsville (Marshals since 2005)
•Janet Mitchell of Hickory (Office Administration volunteer since 2006)
•Rodney Teague of Taylorsville (Marshal since 2004)
All nominees have been inducted into the tournament's Volunteer Hall of Fame, which recognizes volunteers who have made exceptional efforts over the history of the Greater Hickory Classic at Rock Barn Presented by Kia Motors.A complete list of Hall of Fame inductees follows at the end of this release.
As the tournament's top volunteer, Shook also becomes a nominee for the PGA TOUR's Champions Tour Volunteer of the Year award selected at the conclusion of the 2008 season.
