Completing the Schuylkill River Trail to Create the Region's First Green Transportation Corridor

Date: Thursday, February 26, 2009
Location: Academy of Natural Sciences
Time: 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
RSVP Requested http://www.ansp.org/environmental/townsquare/email_signup.php

Panel:
Sarah Clark Stuart, Schuylkill River Park Alliance
Loree D. Jones, Executive Director, Manayunk Development Corporation
Joseph Syrnick, President, Schuylkill River Development Corporation
Gina Snyder, Executive Director, East Falls Development Corporation
Christopher Leswing, Assistant Director, Planning Supervisor, Lower Merion Township

The Schuylkill River Trail is an extremely popular and heavily used recreational asset and commuter route. It also has the potential to be much more: a connector between a variety of Philadelphia neighborhoods and suburban neighbors, the region's first green transportation corridor for multiple communities, a strong catalyst for economic development, and a critical access point to open space and commuting paths for underserved neighborhoods.
To be complete, the trail has critical gaps that need to be filled, and it needs to be extended southward, northward and into more neighborhoods. There are nine trail projects that, if constructed, would complete Philadelphia's Schuylkill River Trail from Delaware County to Montgomery County.
The Forum will detail the public benefits of a completed trail and describe the planned trail segments to make the case for the Greater Philadelphia region and its elected officials to work together to make these trail segments a priority and to fund their construction.
The organizations from the non-profit, development corporation and public sectors working together to articulate the vision for a completed and connected Schuylkill River Trail in the Greater Philadelphia Region include:

Schuylkill River Park Alliance, Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia, Schuylkill River Development Corporation, Schuylkill Project, Manayunk Development Corporation, East Falls Development Corporation, Friends of Ivy Ridge Trail, Lower Merion Township, Pennsylvania Environmental Council, Schuylkill River Heritage Area, Roxborough Development Corporation, and Bartram's Garden .

The panel will include Councilman Darrell Clarke, State Representative Babette Josephs, Schuylkill River Park Alliance co-chair Russell Meddin, and John Randolph, founder of what is now the Schuylkill River Development Corporation. The movie will be preceded by a light reception.

Date: Thursday, July 17, 2008
Time: 7:30 pm screening; doors open at 6:30
Location: The Academy of Natural Sciences, main auditorium; 1900 Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Philadelphia

The film chronicles citizens’ ultimately victorious efforts to create and preserve at-grade access to the Schuylkill River Park despite the adamant objections of CSX Railroad. The 15-minute film explores the modern and practical strategies used against CSX – strategies that that eventually forced the international transportation company to compromise.

“This is a great citizens’ victory -- a prime example of how a community can come together to work against the odds and emerge triumphant,” said Rob Stuart, president of Evolve Strategies, which produced the film.

“We created this movie, in part, to inspire and instruct other organizations across Philadelphia and in other parts of the country on how to successfully wage efforts to improve and protect their own communities,” added director/producer Tara Nurin.

“Free the River Park” was produced and directed by Rob Stuart, President of Evolve Strategies, who, as a leader in the Logan Square Neighborhood Association, helped coordinate the campaign, and Tara Nurin, former CN8 reporter and producer of Tigre Hill’s The Barrel of a Gun. The documentary was filmed on location from July 2007 through June 2008 and contains interviews with Mayor Michael Nutter; CSX Resident Vice President Bill Goetz; Councilmen Darrell Clarke and Jack Kelly; State Representative Babette Josephs; Schuylkill River Park Alliance co-coordinators Russell Meddin and Sarah Clark Stuart, as well as Schuylkill River Development Council founder John Randolph and park users. The documentary runs 15 minutes in length and the DVD, including extras, will be available for purchase at the event and at www.riverparkalliance.org.
