thegaleria's Notes

I've always been asked what I like best about being a wedding photographer. I love photographing people and I love telling stories. There is no better place for that than in weddings. You see a myriad of moods and expressions and there is always a different story you can tell. And by doing so, you have somehow become an embedded part of their lives, no matter how small it may be.

And I love traveling and for some reason being a wedding photographer has given me the opportunity to do so more often that I thought possible. Maybe the world has become a smaller place now and the fact that you are reading this minutes after it was published is a clear testament to that.

But above all, I think the most gratifying part about being a wedding photographer is to be able to meet people, to be able to share your knowledge and in return learn from their experience. That and that alone has given so much insight to life in a broader perspective of things. Indeed, many have now become close friends and in more ways than ever, I'm thankful that things had turned out that way.

I wish everyone a fantastic New Year ahead and as always, I look forward to many more good years and I wish it would be the same for you too.

Cheers,
Brian

Featuring Steven & Charissa
I came to know about the plight of Little Charmaine through a friend of mine. When I read what her and her family was going through and having myself lost someone that was very dear to me a couple of years back, I cannot help but feel compelled to at the very least write something and get the word out in any small way I can.

Charmaine is 3 years and 7 months old and she's suffering from a rare form of cancer known as neuroblastoma. While a little girl at her age would probably be walking and running around, discovering all the wonders of the world around her, unfortunately Little Charmaine has to learn to fight for her own life. You can read more about her from her blog or simply click at the image below. Little Charmaine is also on Facebook.

When Night Fa11s was featured in Mediacorp's interactive media, xin.sg on 1 May 2009. Article is in Mandarin.

The film stills that I took for When Night Fa11s were featured in U Weekly <优1周> (Issue 177, 27 Apr 2009). The feature was mainly on the interview with Desmond Tan, the lead role for the short film. I'm not sure what was mentioned in the article as my Mandarin is only as good as my French (which you would have guessed isn't very good at all). The English translation is in progress and will be posted once it's done.

Desmond Tan

Filming When Night Fa11s was a novel experience in many ways for Desmond Tan, including his first nude scene.

One of the 2007 Star Search finalists, Desmond was casted by local award-winning director Derrick Lui as the male lead of his new short film When Night Fa11s. Filmed in four days, Desmond plays Eternity, a taxi driver who is in a rocky relationship with Wei Wei (starring Jessica Tan) due to poor communication. In the short film, there was a memorable scene where Desmond had to be seduced by a blond prostitute whom he picked up at Geylang.

When asked how he felt about the ‘tantalizing’ scene, he replied that there was no time for him to acquaint himself with his co-actor. There was not even a rehearsal prior to the take.

“It was awkward to be touched by a woman whom you do not know at all. Furthermore, the character I played was deeply in love with his girlfriend. Faced with sudden temptation, he was lost and struggled with himself.”

Desmond also felt that the tight filming schedule gave him a sense of accomplishment at the end of the project. He believed that he has emerged from this experience a better actor. During the interview, he also shared the five breakthroughs he made as a result of this short film.

Too passive, resulting in love lost
Firstly, he was to play a man older than himself, sporting a 60s hairstyle and goatee. Secondly, he had to drive a real taxi, which resulted in many passers-by trying repeatedly to flag his taxi down.

Another challenge was to smoke. Desmond, being a non-smoker had to learn from friends how to smoke so as to give a more realistic portrayal of his character. To capture that action from numerous angles, Desmond smoked continuously; this gave him a sore throat for the next couple of days.

The fourth breakthrough he made was being filmed nude. He shared candidly that this was not the original plan and how the nude scene came about.

“The scene showed me in the bathtub and I was wearing white briefs. However, the reflection showed the briefs and the director requested that I took them off. I agreed, and the director cleared the set.

Finally, Desmond had to cry in front of the camera when his character’s girlfriend left him. Desmond shared gleefully that it was not easy to tear in one eye and hold the tear in the other.

When asked if he used his past experience to help him in his acting, Desmond shared graciously “I am already 23, and to say that I have no experience in relationships would be a lie. I thought of a relationship that did not manage to take off due to my passivity. In the end, we could only stay as good friends. I guess, it is the relationships that you cannot have that leave the most indelible mark in our hearts.”

Desmond agrees with the portrayal of men in this short film. In any relationship, men are generally more passive and poor in communication. He felt that the representation of men in this short film is realistic and poignant.

Desmond will be working with Royston Tan in the near future on another short film, but the character and filming have yet to be finalized.

The inspiration for When Night Fa11s website was originally from Wong Kar-Wai's Tête-bêche, a pictorial book featuring film stills and never-seen-before shots from his critically acclaimed feature film In the Mood for Love (花樣年華). The idea was to have a website that feels a lot like "flipping through the pages" of an old book or a photo album so that you can "feel the entire film" simply by flipping from the first page to the end.
