Facebook for iPhone 3.0 is coming very soon. I can't predict an exact date when I will submit to Apple, but I can say that I am about 98% done. So what's new in this update?

1. The "new" News Feed
2. Like
3. Events (including the ability to RSVP)
4. Notes
5. Pages
6. Create new photo albums
7. Upload photos to any album
8. Zoom into photos
9. Easier photo tagging
10. Profile Pictures albums
11. A new home screen for easy access to all your stuff, search, and notifications
12. Add your favorite profiles and pages to the home screen
13. Better Notifications (they link to the comments so you can reply)
14. Quickly call or text people right from the Friends page
15. Messages you are typing will be restored if you quit or are interrupted by a phone call

The one feature everyone is asking for, Push Notifications, is in development but it won't make it into 3.0. You can expect it in a 3.1 update later this summer.

When I have submitted the app to Apple I will let you all know!

This past weekend we released Facebook Connect for iPhone, a project that has been the focus of my time for the last couple of months. While this project doesn't directly improve the Facebook iPhone app, it will make Facebook a bigger part of your overall iPhone experience, and that's a huge win. In practical terms, that means you'll be able to easily find friends to play games against, post your top scores on your Wall, see restaurant and movie reviews your friends have written, share your own reviews on Facebook. Already some of the most popular iPhone apps are using Facebook Connect, like Tap Tap Revenge 2, Urbanspoon, Flixster Movies, and Sportacular.

As for the next version of the Facebook iPhone app, I am starting work on the next big upgrade (version 3.0) and it's going to be fantastic. I can't predict when it will be done, but I'll be sharing my progress with you in these Notes along the way. I read all the discussions here and I know what new features you guys want, so I'll be working hard to get them to you as soon as possible.

I submitted the 2.2 update to Apple tonight, so it should be available within a week. It fixes a lot of bugs and improves stability significantly. I strongly recommend that everyone update to 2.2 as soon as it is available.

Some major bug fixes include:

1. Timestamps - While the 2.1 update claimed to fix this, it didn't. This time I had users from the UK and the east coast of the US help me out and confirm that they are actually correct now.

2. Chat now allows you to go offline or back online if you have chosen to go offline from the web. This should resolve the problem many users experienced where they were not able to send chat messages.

3. Duplicate friends should no longer appear. The 2.1 update also claimed to fix this and didn't, but I have put in place a much better solution this time.

4. Notifications - for many users the app crashed when tapping the notifications tab. This has been fixed, and also the appearance of the Notifications tab has been fixed so it includes all of the details again.

5. After deleting messages from the Inbox, they will no longer come back when you restart the app.

6. The Quotes section of profiles will no longer bug out when the quotes were really really long.

7. Hitting "See All" in the photo browser should no longer cause the app to crash so frequently.

8. The photo viewer is much less flaky, so it is not as easy to accidentally tag a photo.

Also, a big thanks to Reece Michael Wissler and Rob Cheshire for helping me test the app!

Many people have reported that Chat never works for them in the iPhone app. If you try to send a message but the app says it could not be delivered, this usually means that when you were using Facebook on the web you chose to "go offline" in Chat. The problem is that the iPhone app doesn't tell you that you're offline, or give you the option to go online, so you're left confused and thinking that Chat is broken.

In the next update (coming very soon) this will change, and the app will tell you if you are offline and give you the option to go online. Once this is clarified you should be able to send and receive Chat messages without any other problems.
Hi everyone - Joe here. I just wanted to apologize for my late response in fixing the many bugs that have made it frustrating to use this app. I want to assure everyone that I haven't abandoned the app, I just took a break from working on it.

The good news is that I am back to working on the app full-time and you should expect to see big improvements soon. The 2.1 update that came out last week only addressed a handful of the problems, so I am planning to release a 2.2 update within the next week. The primary goal for the 2.2 update is to stop the crashing (for real this time!) I've fixed a bunch of bugs in the last couple days and I am already having trouble making it crash! :)

If you're still using the app through all the bugs, I really appreciate your patience. In a few weeks the crashes will be a distant memory and you will finally be able to actually start trusting Facebook for iPhone for all your mobile Facebooking.
The 2.1 update showed up on the App Store today, and hopefully it will resolve most of the issues people have experienced. Unfortunately Apple approved the update so fast that our servers have not had a chance to get updated yet with the code to support the update. As a result, you'll notice that timestamps are still wrong in some places, and long inbox threads still load in their entirety. This will all be working again in the next day or two as the servers catch up.

Thanks for your patience!
Version 2.0 of Facebook for iPhone is finally available on the App Store! It takes care of the most popular feature requests I've been hearing, but there is still plenty of work to do. I'm already working on the next version, which I expect to have things like events, birthdays, groups, profile editing, and some surprises.

I've been hearing some bug reports in 2.0, so I will probably wind up doing a 2.1 release in the short term to address many of these problems. Please tell me if you find anything wrong (in the comments here, or you can message me), and I will try to fix it.

Thanks everyone for using Facebook for iPhone!

Thanks everyone for being patient waiting for me to finish Facebook for iPhone 2.0. The good news is, I plan to submit the update to the iPhone App Store a week from today. That doesn't necessarily mean you will be able to download it a week from today - Apple reviews every application before making it available, and they can sometimes take up to a week. So, you may get the update as soon as next Wednesday, or as late as October 1st.

Thanks for your patience!

It's been a few weeks since we released Facebook for iPhone 1.1, and many of you are wondering what's next. Let's take a look at some of the upcoming features in version 2.0, which will arrive in the App Store in September. You'll be happy to know that this release brings the app a lot closer to matching all of the functionality of the Facebook website.

News Feed

In version 1.1, the News Feed contained only status updates and mobile photo uploads. In version 2.0 you will have the exact same News Feed experience as on the Facebook website. You will be able to see your friends' Posted Items, new interests and relationships, photos, and all other stories that pass through News Feed. You'll be able to comment on every story, and filter the feed by certain categories, applications, and friend lists, just like on the new Facebook.

Notifications

You'll be able to see all of your Notifications on the Home tab, and new Notifications will arrive in real-time while the app is running. We're preparing for the release of Apple's new push service, which will allow us to deliver Notifications to your iPhone even when you're not running Facebook for iPhone. I expect that to be one of the features in the next version after 2.0.

Profile Redesign

Profiles now have a tabbed design, like the new Facebook website, and a combined Wall and Mini-Feed.

Search for and Approve New Friends

This has been a popular request. You will now be able to search for people beyond your own Friends, request their friendship, and approve your own friend requests.

Inbox

In version 1.1, you can only see the first 30 messages in your Inbox. In version 2.0, you will be able to see older messages, all the way back to the beginning. You'll also be able to search your Inbox and see your Sent folder.
