Saraqeb: City in a State of Disaster
The Local Coordination Committees in Syria (LCC) appeals to the International Red Cross and other international humanitarian organizations to enter the city of Saraqeb immediately to treat the injured and bury the martyrs. Forty martyrs have been confirmed killed since the regime’s army stormed the city. There are also a large number of unidentified corpses and injured people lying in the city streets that no one is able to reach or treat.
The Assad regime initiated its ongoing large-scale military assault on the city on Sunday, March 25, 2012, resulting in the departure of more than 70 percent of the city’s residents. Regime forces have forcibly displaced a large number of activists’ families, and burned and shelled approximately 300 homes. They also pillaged and set fire to most shops, as well as the Saraqeb Coordination Committee’s media office.
The LCC holds Assad’s security and armed forces fully responsible for all the massacres committed against the people of Saraqeb – from killing to torture to destruction of homes to the displacement of families.
The LCC reiterates that these crimes will not go unpunished. We call upon the Arab states and the international community, as well as human rights organizations, to hold perpetrators of these crimes accountable at the International Criminal Court.
Glory to our martyrs and victory to our Revolution
