1&1's Stance on SOPA

As a global provider of domains and hosting services, we oppose the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) or Protect-IP (PIPA) Acts currently under consideration. While we observe the concerns of those who are troubled by the potential impact on protecting intellectual property online, 1&1 feels there is an urgent need to strike a balance between dissemination of and access to information and protection against its illegal use within the public domain.

 

The US government is currently reviewing SOPA and PIPA as possible ways to prevent unlawful distribution of copyrighted materials available on the internet. These current proposals, if passed, would allow for significant interventions into the technological and economical basis of the internet. This could put the vast benefits and economic opportunities of entirely legal and legitimate e-business models at risk. Generally, companies offering technological services should not be forced to be the executor of authority in such matters. If they were to act upon every implication of content infringement without any judicial research into the actual usage of its customers, the integrity behind their customer’s freedom of information and speech would be enormously harmed.

 

1&1 Internet, Inc. has worked through associations and with related companies to ensure that these aspects are taken into account. Thus, we welcome the serious consideration by the US Congress of the potential harmful effects on Internet freedom should SOPA and / or PIPA be passed as law, and hope the stability of the Internet’s domain name system (DNS) remains intact.

 

We encourage every Internet user concerned about these plans to contribute to the debate and to raise their voice with their local representatives in the House or Senate. One way to express your concerns could be to use one of the websites that emerged to protect user interests in the current legislative debate, such as Fight for the Future.

    • Matt Kaiser Best news I've gotten all day. I chose 1and1 over GoDaddy for hosting, and it paid off even before this message. The mass exodus of customers switching from GoDaddy due to their original stance on SOPA gives us an opportunity to put in a good work for 1and1. SOPA must be stopped, liberty must be upheld.

    • 1&1 Internet, Inc. Hi Tim, With over 10.5 million customer contracts it's understandable that not everyone will be happy 100% of the time. However, our 24/7 support team does their best to accommodate all of our customers' requests. I assure you that most of our customers are satisfied.

      I understand that sometimes you can have problems. But our situation is unacceptable. I mean I can tolerate 1 or 2 downs until you find a solution and that won´t happen again. But 6 in 2 months with more than 24 hours to get a partial solut...ion ?After the last one we were told that after changing batteries, fix bios it won´t happen again ... we were told that almost 3 times of those 6. Sometimes it sounds like a joke for the customer.

      I´ve sent an email to complaints and the solution we got was "If you are unsatisfied you can cancel". I can´t cancel now after I´ve paid you the invoice. I can´t cancel until you provide me a week of a working service to move all to a new server that I don´t know how I´ll pay because I´ve paid yours. 2 downs in 3 days. How would I move if you can´t even keep the server up for more than 3 days?

      Today we told all our visitors that we would release one of the most awaited modding work of the year. Now we have to provide them an alternative link at mediafire because we have a 150 USD server that can´t be up more than 3 days.

      As someone who has been a customer of 1AND1 having both VPS and Dedicated servers hosted by you, I am absolutely thankful that you are against SOPA and PIPA. I wasn't sure about your stance until I stumbled across this FB page. I tried aski...ng the server techs when on the phone, but understood why they referred me to the legal department.

      I'd also like to add that your customer service, especially for VPS and Dedicated server packages, is by far the best I have ever encountered over the decade of hosting through many different providers.

      As for Time who has never hosted with 1AND1... Dude, how about try it before you knock it. I've been with them for two years with multiple servers. Any problems I've encountered with my servers is usually solved with a quick, and I mean really quick, call where I'm connected with a real person without any automated crap.

      The only times I've gone down were due to corrupted scripts causing errors on my sites, or from growing user activity. I moved to 1AND1 when my site was too much to handle (20,000 hits a day) from another host. I'm now running the same site on 1AND1 with excess of 110,000 hits a day, 3 million a month, with no problem.
