CCSO ARRESTS MAN WHO BEAT AND BROKE HIP OF ELDERLY WOMAN, THEN HE BEATS ELDERLY MAN
(PORT CHARLOTTE) Charlotte County Sheriff's deputies arrested a Port Charlotte man after he battered two people, ages 65 and 67 Friday night; one victim has a broken hip. Charged with Aggravated Battery with Great Bodily Harm, and Battery on a Person 65 or Older, was James Otis Byrd, 56, 21150 Gertrude Avenue.
Deputies were dispatched to the Sunshine Villas at 9:28 p.m. and upon arrival observed a man and a woman lying on the ground in front of apartment G-3; both were bloody and moaning. The two advised they were attacked by Byrd. The female victim, 65, had gone over to Byrd’s apartment to visit with her friend who was visiting Byrd. While the two women were talking, Byrd became upset for unknown reasons, began yelling at the 42 year old woman and hit her as she sat in a chair. The 65 year old woman said she was going to call CCSO and Byrd attacked her when she tried to exit. She didn’t know how many times Byrd had hit her.
The woman said she fell to the ground outside the apartment and then saw Byrd attack the 67 year old man who came to her defense and as he called CCSO; he too fell to the ground after being stuck. After beating the man, Byrd walked back to the woman lying on the ground and began kicking her before returning to his apartment.
Both victims were transported to Fawcett Memorial Hospital.
When deputies knocked on Byrd’s door, he opened it and was asked to step outside; he was then taken into custody. Byrd told deputies he couldn’t remember what happened, but when asked if he hit or struck anyone, he replied he may have. He also said he did not know the two individuals lying on the ground outside his apartment. Deputies said Byrd had no signs of injury but was intoxicated. He was arrested and taken to the Charlotte County Jail where he remains on $35,000 bond; this is Byrd’s second booking.
