American Mary delves into an underground subculture in order to tell its story. When Dr. Mary Mason has here carefully planned life snatched from her grasp, new - albeit illegal oppotunities - suddenly come her way in the exciting but decidely grey area of Body Modification. The Body has always been the ultimate target in horror cinema. While it's always fun to drive a victim insane on the screen, at the end of the day, punters want to see some visceral carnage.

Much of Audition's running time is devolted to stately paced satire of Japanese May to September romance dramas, as a middle aged man seeks a traditional submissive young wife to help him see out his declining years. It's only when the demure creature he selects turns out to be a sadistic black widow who enjoys torturing men that the films loving and wince inducing focus on intimate violence really starts to take effect. In a shock set piece that is by turns disturbing and blackly comic, the aging salaryman is pierced with needles and loses a foot to an enthusiastically applied cheesewire.
