Threatening Text (SMS) Messages

July 22, 2012 at 7:46pm

New South Wales police are investigating the source of a threatening text message.

It’s believed a large number of people across the state have received the SMS, attempting to extort money, on their phones this morning (Monday 23 July 2012).

This has generated a major increase in calls for assistance to ‘Triple Zero’ (000), the Police Assistance Line (131 444) and local police stations. The origin of the message is under investigation; however, police do not believe it poses a genuine threat.

Police would urge anyone who receives the SMS to disregard it. Anyone who wishes to report they have received the text message should contact the Police Assistance Line on 131 444.
