Megan VanGroll: (Original) Artist's Statement

(Original) Artist's Statement
My work examines the sociopolitical currents that flow in and out of our daily lives, particularly the lives of women. I am drawn to the absurd, the idiosyncratic, especially where it dwells beneath the surface, unexpected. My latest body of work places my nude figure in settings where it is not socially acceptable to be seen nude, nor practical. My goal is that the absurdity of the nudity and the exposition of something so personal as my own body will in turn expose new questions about the surroundings in a subversive manner. In my opinion, the goal of art is to inspire new perspectives on the viewer's everyday world. My intention is to raise more than eyebrows.

In addition, the implied narcissism of painting oneself in the nude (and the belief that it is of interest to others) is itself a reflection of the everyday vanity so prevalent in our increasingly self-important, fame-obsessed, instant-gratification culture in which everyone feels entitled to - and can now have - their fifteen minutes. The exposition that occurs in these paintings is not unlike the self-exploitation of the common blogger, "reality" TV or game show contestant, or even Myspace profile-monger, pompously displaying mundane details like personal interests and filling out unsolicited tedious surveys, as if anyone actually cares what they wore that day. Interestingly, when the narcissism of these paintings is not understood as staged, it only serves to highlight the truth of my statements.

My work will continue to revolve around themes of sociopolitical/cultural women's issues in the future. I am currently researching and developing ideas for a new body of work that will focus on food and feminism, exploring the many aspects of the ubiquitous and obsessive role that food plays in our lives.
