Montgomery County Democratic Committee: Election Day Brief from MCDC's Chairman
Election Day Brief from MCDC's Chairman
Good afternoon,
Another campaign and election is in the books, and while we may not have had the sweeping success we have had in recent elections, our candidates and our party still have much of which to be proud.
I am most proud of and thankful for all of our candidates, their staffs and volunteers. Few political acts take more courage and sacrifice than putting oneself before the voters over a long campaign and ultimately waiting for the judgment of the voters. We should all be extremely proud of all of our judicial candidates and candidates for local municipal offices. They worked extremely hard and ran spirited and honorable campaigns.
I would like to offer a special thank you to our candidates who made up the most talented judicial slate that has ever run in Montgomery County. While we only won one of the seven seats available, that win was historic and marked the first time in history that a Democrat has won a contested election for a seat on the county Court of Common Pleas. These seven judicial candidates are incredible attorneys and even better people, and I hope they will stay involved. They all would have been excellent judges, and hopefully will have that chance in the future.
While we only won one of the seven available seats on the bench, the election was extremely close, and proved once again how important every vote is. Had we gotten one more vote in every precinct, we would have had two new Democratic judges. Had we gotten two more votes in each precinct, we would have had three Democratic judges, and that math holds true as we continue down the ballot.
On the local level we had a few disappointments, but we also won the majority on Plymouth Council, Hatboro and on the Colonial School Board, and won important contests throughout the county. In a year where there was a strong headwind against Democratic candidates, we were very competitive. In addition to the successes I mentioned, we were the only suburban county to give state Supreme Court candidate Jack Panella a plurality. I am proud of how our candidates and their supporters performed in a very difficult political climate.
The fact remains that we have made incredible strides over the past decade, and Montgomery County today is arguable the most politically competitive county in the Commonwealth. While this might give us, as Democrats, some angst, it is a positive situation for the voters of Montgomery County.
Finally, I want to thank all of you for your support, encouragement and hard work during this campaign, and I look forward to joining you in many Democratic victories in the future.
All the best,
Marcel Groen
