Clint Eastwood's Gran Torino
It's a mixed bag of a movie. Eastwood's performance as a racist old ***hole is top notch. His character, Walt, just lost his wife. He lives in an old neighborhood that is systematically being 'taken over' by immigrants. Walt is at times humorous, sad, sympathetic and viscious- it's everything you expect from an old veteran like Eastwood. The script, the dialogue, everything is absolutely real. The guy who plays Walt's barber is the perfect foil for Walt's jerk nature. Other notable performances include the Catholic priest who pesters Walt throughout the movie because of a promise made to Walt's dead wife.
The other performances, most notably by the immigrant family next door that Walt becomes wrapped up in, are very poor. The seemed to be constantly aware of the camera, and it was annoying to watch such amateur acting alongside veteran work. Despite that, it's definitely worth watching. The editing could be better but it makes up for it with almost a complete lack of score. It was a refreshing experience to just watch a film without having my emotions manipulated by a score.
