Behind the Scenes - Interview with Tanner Luk, First Prize Winner of the "Spirit of Chingay"
First Prize Winner
The "Spirit of Chingay" 2011
Please tell us a little about yourself.
I’m 49 years old and happily married with 2 beautiful daughters. My wife and my girls are the joys and treasures of my life. I have a great love for travelling. Every travel for work and holidays allow me to experience different cultures and events during my visits. One of the greatest loves in my life is photography. Where opportunities arise, my camera and I will go into action, capturing special moments and sharing them with my friends. This has become very much a part of me. My job allows me to travel sometimes and along the way I get to meet people and make new friends. This is something I have enjoyed tremendously as each person I meet always offer a fresh perspective of themselves and life.
Share with us your passion for photography.
I tool up photography as a hobby in 2009 and I remembered my first camera was a Nikon D90. I have never looked back since then. I love taking candid shots of people where all the natural expressions in that moment of time when they least expected it. These natural emotions reflect the many reactions and thoughts of life and they touch the hearts of my viewers. There are many beautiful memories that are captured in the photographs taken and sometime I would look at these photographs and have a good laugh or smile over the past. In Chingay 2011, I did just that. Chingay is a wonderful event where there are so many opportunities allowing me to capture all the lovely expressions of the audiences and performers. Every corner I turned, there was always something to snap away. Sometimes, the best opportunities arise when I least expected it! And I absolutely loved it to be able to capture it right there and then.
In this “Spirit of Chingay” photography competition, what was the first thing that came to mind when you read the title?
I absolutely love it! It reflected exactly the very reason why I love photography. The “Spirit of Chingay” reflects the very core essence of the purposes and reasons what Chingay is all about. To me, it is all about the celebration of life among the community. The community speaks of team works, friendship, respect, love and harmony. It is a community of colours where all walks of life come together and in all their differences, they stand together as one. This is all about life and making it beautiful. And the “Spirit of Chingay” is all about beauty and unity to me.
Are these the very reasons why your winning piece was chosen to communicate your beliefs of what the “Spirit of Chingay” is all about?
Yes, you are right. There is nothing more beautiful and blessed than to be living in a community of varieties, differences and yet harmonious as one people. The photograph I have chosen reflected all these. It seems to be a bundle of mess as one of the Chingay fans have commented but in this bundle of mess, there were a natural co-ordinated colours and varieties. The best part is the laughters and joys that are shown on the faces of the performers and audiences captured in the photo. They all speak one language of love.
How do you feel winning the photography competition beating the thousands of submissions?
I am very happy and honoured. Really have to thank People’s Association for the opportunity. At the same time, I wouldn’t have done it without the supports of my Chingay Paparazzi team and Rebekah.
How are you planning to use your prize money?
Woohoo! I am going to get myself a 15” Mac Book Pro and give the 3 treasons of my life a wonderful family treat.
