The geriatric medical surgical floor I was assigned to was an eye-opener for me as a new nurse. We were responsible for starting intravenous lines on patients who for the most part, had nothing to work with. Throughout the years, many of the elderly had been "stuck" so many times with needles that their veins were like wood.
