I enjoyed the concert too, particularly the Honegger, which apparently had not been performed by the Phil in twenty years. Credit to Maestro Gilbert for programming of the Martinu and Honegger. (There was however a decided restlessless in the audience between the 2nd and 3rd movements of the Honegger ....)
And, good to hear the strings featured as they were in the Honegger. The new seating is a success.

The "Eroica" is to me Symphony #1. The first truly great symphony foreshadowing the modern orchestra.
Who, but the great Beethoven, could conceive such a momentous work. Haydn and Mozart, wonderful as they are,
their symphonies pale next to the "Eroica". And I'm sure there will be many who disagree with me, nevertheless, go "Eroica."

Let me expand on this bit of information. There was (maybe still is) a 1956 Leonard Bernstein NY Philharmonic MESSIAH. It was reissued on 2 CD's in the "Leonard Bernstein Century"
series. You might check on Amazon for a new or used set.

Unfortunately, the Philharmonic hasn... See More’t recorded Messiah for decades (though you can still find copies of those floating around through the internet). If you live in New York and want to hear an archival recording of one of our recent performances you can contact our Archives for an appointment (archives@nyphil.org). Or if you’d like to hear the radio broadcast of our upcoming performances of Messiah, you can check that schedule at http://nyphil.org/attend/broadcasts/index.cfm?page=broadcastDetail&broadcastKey=259.
