NYPTA This article from the Wall Street Journal shows how budget cuts have taken their toll on transit systems around the country.

online.wsj.com
Public transportation will be more crowded and more expensive this year as big-city transit systems across the country respond to severe budget pressures.

I understand the huge problem facing state and local govts, but isn't it a crying shame to be cutting transit at a time when more people need it than ever? Seems like we transit advocates must learn to shake things up to rearrange our local leaders' fiscal priorities.

NYPTA The following article, published yesterday in the Ithaca Journal,
discusses the DOT's proposed Multiyear plan and includes NYPTA's
response to it. NYPTA's Frank Kobliski is quoted as saying "The only way
upstate and suburban transit systems can achieve the maximum benefit
from the proposed capital plan is if we have the op...erating assistance
to back it up," reinforcing the Association's stance on the proposed
cuts. We will continue to be an active voice in fighting for transit dollars. Let us know what you think!

NYPTA This great article on Mass Transit Magazine's website explains steps transit agencies can take to be more green.

www.masstransitmag.com
It seems everyone is searching for ways to become green and promote sustainability in their homes, workplaces and communities. Increasingly, we are using less, recycling more and replacing what we must with more environmentally friendly alternatives.

Andy Arthur Question: Does NYPTA represent all transit agencies in New York State, or is it only Upstate metro agencies? ie. do you represent things like NYC MTA, or Suffolk Transit and the rural transit agencies like Clinton County Regional Transit (CART).

Thanks so much for your question, Andy. NYPTA represents all public transit in New York, including the MTA and rural transit agencies like CART. Our Board of Directors is a diverse group, representing agencies from around the state. This page on our website lists all current board members: http://nytransit.org/newsainfo/leadership

NYPTA What do you think about WiFi access on public transportation? Would you like to see it on your local public transit line?

We are now offering free wireless internet service on our NX Commuter Xpress service. All 15 buses are now equipped with WiFi providing riders with a way to access the internet through their laptop, PDA or cell phone.

Right now you can pick up a signal on Delaware Ave from several access points. That said, on a local route, where your trip is likely to be shorter, it's not as necessary. On express routes, where people are on longer with smoother rides (without stops), it might make sense.

Could be a good add on revenue stream for CDTA. Definately a necessity for anyone that works on the go.
