Great article. however, it fails to take into account the massive debt levels, both short and long term, the U.S. is currently running (estimated at $70 trillion) and growing. The only way out of that is to print more of the currency thereby debasing it which will force prices of all goods and services higher. Taxes cannot be raised enough to cover... Read More it and foreigners are getting nervous about buying more treasuries because of it.

At some point, the currency will have to be printed to such an extent that it will become worthless. Just take a look at Zimbabwe for example. Every person there is a millionaire yet those millions aren't worth the paper they are printed on. Zimbabwe's currency of course is at the more advances stages. The U.S. has already been down this road before. The orignal founders found that out the hardway by debasing the U.S. Continental to essentially nothing, hense the term "Not worth a Continental". Gold or any other commodity which cannot be produced at will prevents governments from overspending and eventually collapsing their own currency.
