With practice, airbrushing gives better results, but every competent modeller needs to be confident in the use of paint brushes. Don't move on to airbrushing until you are.

Yup, he has to be able to brush-paint first, because even if you do most of your finishing woirk with an airbrush, there are still instances when you'll need to brush-paint detail work. Aldo, even a basic airbrush and compressor won't leave much change out of £150, so you and he need to know that he's really interested before shelling out.

Jack... See More - don't use those gas canisters - as you have found out, they get expensive in a hurry. You can get a basic compressor for the the cost of ten or eleven compressed gas cylinders.

Juan Navalón

Juan Navalón Revell have a Mirage IIIE and is possible to do also a IIR too. But the IIIE proposed is a "bicentennial". I realize this painting the numbers and the squadron on tail... inspiration was the ancient comic "Tanguy et Laverdure"... the kit not is the best of this model... the cockpit is better make it open, but i prefer closed.

Yes, is a reboxed frog, i buy all Mirage III (except the horrible lindberg) for make all variations: i have a IIIC from airfix, a IIIE from Revell, a Mirage 5 from Heller, and i'm bulding now a IIIB 1/48 Heller and other 1/48 IIIE Italeri ... in the future i have to do a IIIR from Heller in 1/72 scale.

Hi Juan...Love the Mirage IIIs.....They were the fighter I grew up wanting to fly as a kid...Have you done any Australian service versions. I understand theres a couple of Australian "after market" companies do conversion kits for the Mirage III in the RAAF service with great squadron tail markings, including a Tigers Head motif.

Randal

Randal Hi this is my First Prize winning 1/48 Canberra PR-9 XH131 which I entered in the Ulster Aviation Society Christmas model competition. The crew compartments are resin aftermarket, (sorry Airfix, couldn't live with the B-(1)8 cockpit parts!) The undercarriage is from SAC, to hold up the (scale) ton of lead over the no...sewheel. Finally, apologies for the poor photo using my mobile, I forgot to bring my "proper" camera...

i've never actually varnished a whole model before, i only usually do the transfers to protect them. any suggestions as to what i should use for the whole model would be helpful.

Klear/ Future/ Pledge floor polish, applied in thin coats with a large, flat, brush, works well as a gloss varnish. You should varnish the whole model, so as to give a constant overall level of finish.
