Oldies Connection Completing the trilogy of Christmas videos, here's a 1961 cartoon that we can think of as an early music video for "The Chipmunk Song." First airing three years after the Grammy-award-winning song became a hit, the cartoon features Alvin, Simon, and Theodore recording "The Christmas Song" (in between Alvin's vain atte...mpts at seeking out his coveted hula hoop). The song was written and recorded by Ross Bagdasarian, Sr. (aka Dave Seville). Go ahead, sing along - you know you want to!

Oldies Connection Here's a charming video that actually predates the focus of Oldies Connection, but the song is a holiday standard that's heard every year at Christmastime. A man named Robert L May wrote a story about a reindeer for the Montgomery Ward company in 1939, and Johnny Marks adapted the story into a song in the late 1940s. ... This cartoon was produced at the behest of Montgomery Ward. Wikipedia and YouTube give differing years but 1948 sounds correct. Enjoy!

You can hear the song by going to legendary Tampa Bay deejay Mason Dixon's page on the WRBQ (Q105) website. Click on the link to listen to the November 25-9A recap - or you can download the whole segment to your co...mputer if you'd like. Listen to the whole hour's worth - Mason does a super job. (The song begins at about the halfway mark.) Enjoy!

Oldies Connection This tune won a Grammy for Record of the Year in 1959, despite the fact that none other than Dick Clark advised the singer not to record it, fearing it would ruin his career if he did. Fortunately, the singer - Bobby Darin - didn't take Dick's advice! "Mack the Knife" became Bobby's signature song and also earned him... a Grammy for Best New Artist. Here's a really cool live performance.
