Hands-On Workshop Series: Spotlight on Shawn O’Hagan
27 Oct 2009, 8:16 pm

D.I.Y. die-hards will love the new One of a Kind Hands-on Workshop Series. Each of the three 1- hour sessions will feature a One of a Kind artisan instructing in their medium of expertise.

Calling all knitting fanatics: On Monday November 30, Shawn will teach students how to use a drop-spindle. Click here to sign up.

Handspinning With Shawn O'Hagan

I have been following Shawn O’Hagan’s blog for several months now & am always left with a feeling of amazement and a touch of envy. Looking at her photos and reading about how she spends her weekends leaves me fantasizing about moving to a beautiful, quaint place like Corner Brook, NFLD & leaving behind the hustle & bustle of Toronto living. But then reality sets in and since moving isn’t really an option, perhaps a one -hour session with Shawn is just the thing to bring us all out of the dark doldrums of November.

At the One of a Kind Christmas Show & Sale, Shawn will be leading a session where participants will learn how to use a drop spindle.

First Shawn will show students how prepare and card a fibre batt and then using a drop spindle, Shawn will teach students how to spin their own fibre. The drop-spindles are hand-made & are yours to keep, so can really perfect your technique! As another bonus Shawn will also provide the instructions on how to make one of her fabulous scarflettes. So if you have mastered knitting & want to take your crafty skills one step further, this is the class for you!

There are only a few spots left, so sign up now!

- Stephanie

I love OAAK for many reasons...it gives me the opportunity to spend an evening with a friend while appreciating Canadian artists. The jewellery is fantastic, the food delectable and I can always find something for that "difficult to shop for person". The best thing for my family....everyone gets the chocolate almond ...bark as a Christmas present :) This is now tradition for my family and everyone is addicted! Amazing show! THANK YOU!!!Read More

I love OOAK because it arouses the constrained artist in me. I feel so refreshed (and a wee bit envious!) when I'm able to observe and admire the creative talent all around me within one location. Our society is indebted to these expressive artists who bring so much beauty into our world, and happiness by sharing the...ir talents and creative abilities. Thank you, all participants and organizers of OOAK... it's my "must do" every Fall/Winter and Spring! I look forward to the shows with as much anticipationas the first snowflake... and tulip!Read More

I love One of a Kind because it introduced me to an amazing artisan named Lesley-Anne Green. Lesley-Anne is the creator of Millie, a wonderful girl that captured my heart at first sight. This is the story of how I met Millie. My mom and I have been going to the OOAK Show for over 25 years. It is our time to spend a day... together, just the two of us. Two years ago I stepped foot down one of the last aisles at the Spring show and when I looked over to my right I saw “her”, this sweet, toothy, grinning girl and it was as if she were looking right at me from across the room. I quickly made my way over to Lesley-Anne’s booth and called my Mom over to see what had caught my eye. She knew by the look on my face that I had found a treasure, something that I needed to take home and love. This treasure, a gangly, gawky delicate girl was named “Millie” and when my Mom and I saw this little detail we new it was fate. I started talking to Lesley-Anne and she told me that she had named Millie after Millie the Model, a comic book character who I had never heard of. I then proceeded to share with Lesley-Anne that my Grandma, ever since I could remember, has called me Millie the Model and I never really knew why but she has always used it as a term of endearment. It really was fate…Millie met Millie. Lesley-Anne explained that she had completed Millie before the OOAK Christmas Show but didn’t bring her because she wasn’t ready to let her go just yet. When it came time for the Spring show she decided it was time to display Millie. After we had talked for a bit, Lesley-Anne said that she was really happy to know that Millie would be going home with me, someone who would truly appreciate, love and take care of her. Whenever I see Lesley-Anne I make sure to stop by to see what fun new creations she’s come up with and to let her know that Millie is still my favourite girl and that she has a wonderful home where she is appreciated and loved very much. Thank you One of a Kind for letting me find my little Millie.Read More

Ruth Moffatt

Ruth Moffatt I love One of a Kind Show because it's all Canadian. What better way to support Canada than to buy from our wonderful and talented Canadian artists. I bought these garden chairs and the table from Jardinique and they complement our back yard, deck and garden perfectly.

One of the things I love the most about the One of A Kind Show is that for the last two years I have done 90% of my Christmas shopping there.... thank you for helping me side-step the chaos that is the mall.... and giving unique gifts to my loved ones.
Of all the things that I have purchased at the One of A Kind Show ov...er the years, my Sailor Girl stick pearl earings (pictured) are my "go-to" pair.
A bag by Kairos Designs, photos from Alphabet Photography, my Marmalade necklace, the angel on top of my Christmas tree... all of these and many more things make the One of a Kind Show a part of my every day life all year long.
Kind, funny, personable and informative... the vendors at the One of a Kind Show make a day of shopping that much more fun to enjoy with family and friends.... especially the bagel makers who put tpgether a fab toasted sesame seed with cream cheese and lox.... and the great guys at the Tickleberry booth. I can't wait to see you all again this year!

Diane Walker

Diane Walker The fall OOAK is a fun start to the holiday season. I love shopping for unique gifts and meeting all the talented artists. Although I always leave with lots of gourmet foods, Mad Batter gingerbreads, soaps, candles, leather goods and more, my first stop is always to Sea Spirits. I look forward every year to adding a new ( or make that a few) adorable whimsical ornaments to my Christmas tree.

A Walk in the Park: Mr Jefferson (Monster Factory) and his orange pet frog (Cheval De Bois). I love OOAK is because supporting Canadian artists and ethically made products composed of non-toxic materials is very important for me and my family. The Monster Factory and Cheval De Bois are favourites for gift giving for my... loved ones, both the young and the young at heart. Just the other day one of our little ones hinted, by way of a list, what he wants. And the list was full of special heirloom quality treats like Mr. Jefferson and his friend the orange frog.
Supporting OOAK a wonderful community that stands for the preservation of values like legacy, quality and craft just feels right.

Lisa

Lisa I love the one of a kind craft show because I can find
perfect gifts for the hard to buy person, spend a day off work with family and
friends, and pamper myself with great items to help me relax, indulge in yummy
treats, decorate my apartment, and express myself through unique clothing.

Eliana Blu

Eliana Blu I love being able to buy beautiful, original things that speak for originality over conformity; and that I know have been ethically made, under fair labour conditions by local artists. At the One of a Kind show, I believe in a sustainable, ethical and ecological world!

Going to the One of A Kind Show has been a family tradition of ours for over 10 years now! The women in my family gather in Toronto (some having to drive into the city for our special day!), and we all go downtown for a full day of great art, great food, and great gift ideas! (Gifts for ourselves and others, that is!...) We now have 4 generations of "women" all meeting each year for the One of a Kind! From my 4-year-old niece to my 88-year-old Gran, our hands-down "collective" favourite exhibitor each year is Lilliput Hats! We all LOVE looking at and trying on her beautiful hats that are "brimming" with bows, feathers, flowers, and waves of felt! Over the years, I've collected so many beautiful treasures at the One of The Kind, so my picture is a compilation of some of my all-time favourites: A Lilliput Hat, one of Lorraine's Bears (a Hall of Famer!), earrings from Delicate Touch, Bingham's Pottery, a necklace, a pillow... So many beautiful things, so many happy memories! We can't wait to come back again this winter!Read More

I absolutely love the One of a Kind show! One stop shopping for unique gifts and a day out with friends. The inspiration and creativity is just endless. My favourite memory is tasting all the homemade food samples, especially the spicy! I would have to say my favourite artist is Lisa Yang from Local King Rubber Stamp. ...She makes awesome rubber stamps for Scrapbooking and Card making. I have attached a photo of some of the rubber stamps I purchased along with a few Artist Trading Cards she made as part of the great demos she does at her booth. See you soon at the OOAK show. :) NatRead More

I love The One of a Kind Show for its festive atmosphere and the excitement of finding something that I truly love. Either it be a piece of art for the home, unique gifts for friends, or the time spent with my family and the artist who are passionate about their products, we are never disappointed.

My most treasured me...mory was last year, when I was lucky enough to attend a brunch with my mother that was held on location at The One of a Kind Show for a draw to wind tickets. We did not win, but the experience was prize enough because the food was excellent and we were able to get some more shopping done, which is when I acquired my most favorite item...my exotic Judy Black purse.Read More
