Faculty and visiting artists from the Department of Dance at Ohio State present “Manimals and Other Human Creatures,” an evening of new works, Thursday—Saturday, November 19-21, 2009 at 8 p.m. in Sullivant Theatre, 1813 N. High St. on campus.
Saint-Saens’ grand zoological fantasy, “Carnival of the Animals,” is the inspi...ration for “Manimal House,” a new work by John Giffin. The piece brings a contemporary perspective to the music and provides insight into the most curious and cruel of creatures, the “manimal.”
David Covey, performs his solo piece, “For Merce and John.” The work is a celebratory, spontaneous improvisation paying tribute to the late contemporary choreographer Merce Cunningham and composer John Cage, his frequent collaborator.
In a rare stage appearance, John Giffin and Victoria Uris perform a duet on the eve of their retirement from the OSU dance faculty. “Companions,” choreographed by Susan Hadley, is a meditation on friendship, memories, and a life together.
“Providence Atoll,” choreographed by Victoria Uris, is a visual imagining of Estonian composer Erkki-Sven Turr’s “Insula deserta (“Deserted Islands”).
Visiting artist Meghan Durham performs her new solo work, “George Lassos the Moon,” which plays with light, gesture, and movement—all representing an elusive search for the truth. Composer and musician Michael Wall, a resident artist, composed the original score. The solo references Frank Capra’s use of shifting symbolic meaning in his film, It’s a Wonderful Life.
Melanie Bales’ new work is set to “Nocturnes No. 4 and No. 6” by French minimalist composer Erik Satie, is performed by visiting artists Abby Yager and Ming-lung Yang.
“Patterns of Prayer” by Susan Van Pelt Petry, involves nine dancers, a video projection by Ric Petry of CCAD, balls of twine, and references to prayer and meditation to music based on a 12th century “Cantiga de Santa Maria.”
Tickets available at the door. Tickets are $10 general admission, $5 senior citizens, students, and anyone with Buck ID.
For more information, (614) 292-7977.
