When there’s no plumbing, no municipal infrastructure, or even a well near by, getting water–especially enough for a whole family–suddenly becomes a grueling and time-consuming task.

Relatively little of the world's water is being used in homes. Far larger percentages are used in industry and in growing food in places not suited for those crops. Individual guilt is not the answer; structural change is.

Clean water is the best and cheapest preventive medicine there is. Having access to it and good sanitation would dramatically reduce illness and death rates around the world. It should be a top priority.

We can beat poverty and hunger—but we’ve got to ACT FAST. When you pledge to ACT FAST with Oxfam, you agree to do three things. Each step builds on the power of numbers: 1, 10, 100. And each person who takes the pledge brings us closer to our goal of beating poverty.

Oxfam America The crisis in Congo has killed over 5 million people. And a year after major fighting in Goma, east Congo, hit the headlines, the situation in the country has only gotten worse.

You can help by signing a Causes petition which we will give to the UN showing that ordinary people from around the world want the UN peacekeepers in Congo to protect people from violence, not contribute to the escalating humanitarian crisis.

Actually, the current conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo (from 1988 to 2009) has resulted in over 6 million deaths so far (instead of the 5 million mentioned here by Oxfam) equalling the amount of Jews who were murdered in the Holocaust during the Second World War. The previous conflict in the DR Congo under the reign of King Leopold of Belgium (from 1895 to 1912) resulted in over 10 million deaths.

A lot has changed in the 25 years since a terrible famine killed about one million Ethiopians. But rural communities still face many problems and that’s why investing in agriculture and rural development is so important.

Yes, climate change is happening all over the world, but it’s also happening right here at home. This report gives us the tools to pinpoint which communities in the Southeast are most vulnerable to disasters—and it’s not always where you might think.
