What do Benjamin Britten and Pete Townshend have in common, besides being British? They were both inspired by Henry Purcell. Earlier this year, Townshend, of the rock band The Who, cited Purcell’s harmonies as one of his influences. Britten wrote "The Young Person’s Guide To The Orchestra" using a theme from Purcell’s ...incidental music for the play "Abdelazer." Tuesday morning, Mark Schwitzgoebel plays a suite from "Abdelazer" on 90.5 Classical. http://wkar.orgRead More

It’s seldom performed today but Carl Maria von Weber’s “Der Freischutz”
has a special place in opera history. “Der Freischutz” is historically
significant because
it introduced romanticism and nationalism to German opera. It gave
German opera it’s own identity over Italian influences. And, it was
popular and successful to boot. Mark Schwitzgoebel plays the overture
to “Der Freischutz” Monday at 9 on 90.5 Classical.

90.5 Classical from WKAR When British composer Ralph Vaughan Williams wrote a piece for the 1939 World's Fair in NYC it wasn't exactly the kind of thing you might expect. You might think it would be a big, jubilant work, the kind of thing John Williams might write. Instead, it's reflective and quiet. Jody Knol plays Vaughan Williams' "Five Variants on Dives and Lazarus" at 1 pm today on 90.5 Classical.
