A New Way Forward

A New Way Forward Everyone -- Happy New Year. We will be thinking of the struggles we went through this year and realize that an important part of being able to have greater and deeper happiness and freedom is in the hope that small things we experience every day in our homes and in public fold into big kinds of progress.

"Few will have the greatness to bend history; but each of us can work to change a small portion of events, and in the total of all those acts will be written the history of this
generation ... It is from numberless diverse acts of courage and belief that human history is thus shaped. Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of
oppression and resistance." [RFK]

And, as Teddy said: " ... the Dream never dies..."

May each day of the coming year bring us all ever closer to
to genuine peace and security

Resolve to do one simple act each day to advance the cause of Peace... a simple kindness; a letter to the editor; a call or email to Congress; a modest donation to your favorite cause; one additional story each day to be better informed...

Peace, Tolerance, and Understanding All begin at Home.

One person can make a difference.

That Person is YOU! Me. WE

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL

A New Way Forward AIG e-mail trail is busting them. If this gets further investigated, we'll have one small, but important win:

The probing e-mails came from every direction inside insurance giant American International Group during the summer and fall of 2007, all with the same underlying question:

A New Way Forward We've been planning the exact same campaign out in two weeks or so -- we want TO BREAK UP WITH YOUR BANK -- BREAK UP CREDIT CARDS, DEBT, BIG BANK ACCOUNTS. HuffPO does the same.

Lets drop all the decade hype. I know we tend to structure history in ten year swallows: The 60’s, the 70, the 80’s etc. It is all so neat and so clean but, alas, not quite true.

A New Way Forward A new bipartisan bill in Congress to reinstate Glass-Steagall. Read the bill, learn more, comment and vote:

www.opencongress.org
A response to the recent financial crisis and the subsequent government bailouts, this bill would essentially reinstate the New Deal-era Glass-Steagall Act that, until its repeal in 1999, separated commercial banking from investment banking.

Never get out of Congress, but it would be the morally right thing to do. Every bank pretending to be Goldman Sachs (having a "prop" desk) has substantially contributed to the decline of the U.S. economy for working people while subsidizing the growth of the under-taxed, self-aggrandizing Wall Street class. But too many compromises have been ... See Moremade in the name of U.S. GDP growth -- now GDP is more an armageddon ticker than a measure of human progress. But I'm not certain this can be undone -- now -- without causing even more damage for average, taxpaying (gullible but honest) working Americans. We have to start somewhere though.

A New Way Forward US' political system is disheartening and that is why we all need to ask ourselves how we can most strategically change the very structure of the political system. The answer is why I helped start Open Congress or why we're working on ANWF. We must get at a root problem in politics - the marriage of policy to money and... the extreme growth of corporations. Ezra Klein of the Wash Post agrees that structural change is the only way out:

I'm afraid the game is rigged and there is little hope within the framework of the present scheme - which is so obviously skewed to meet the needs and interests of the rich. The system must, somehow, become more democratic, and this will not happen if the vast majority of Americans fail to realize that a one-sided class war has been being waged ... See Moreagainst them by about 1/2 of 1 percent of the population.

The Reeps and the DLC type corporatists within the Democratic party only serve the interests of that .5%.

In order to revoke corporate personhood, we need to whip up a populist revolt, and sadly, we are too divided by polar issues (by design) to get to that point.
