My son is on 15 milligrams of abilify each day plus zoloft. He is still having fits although he will calm down quickly in most instances. He has aspergers. Has anyone had continued major outbursts on the abilify? I worry about TD since he paces all the time and can't see to concentrate on anything for long periods.

Sometimes even when you tell strangers that your child is Autistic, they still look at you like your crazy. I had some T shirts made that my husband and I wear when we go out with our son. It says...

When something like that happens in public...I had an elderly man threaten to knock Tyler's head off at Wal-Mart cause, in his own little world, he was making burping sounds and instead of the man walking away, he chose to confront me and my child. Its much easier to grab my child and run, which I've done before. But, it is much more healthier ... See Moreand a good opportunity to educate when I try to explain to the person that my son has autism, and why my son's behaving might not be up to his or her standards, hard as it may be.

Erin

Erin Hi, I just read watched the preview about this book and can't wait to order and read it!

I am a senior at Eastern Michigan University going to be a special education teacher and can't wait to be done with school so I can help students with Autism see their ABILITES as opposed to the things they "can't do."

Laura, where... did your family live when your son was young? Also, was he in an inclusion classroom? Take care and have a great weekend!

Hi Erin! We lived (and still live) in Lafayette, California. Matthew was not in an inclusion classroom, but in a special day class. It was more appropriate for him to be there because a regular classroom was too stimulating!!

Typically parents of individuals with moderate to severe disabilities get legal custody of their children when they turn 18 so that they are able to legally make medical and financial decisions for them as well as where they live and their care. If your son is able to care for himself he is a legally responsible adult and it is his choice

Faye HINI vaccination or not? Our school district is giving them out today 4-8pm but I have never given my kids flu shots, nor have I ever had one. Some people look at me like I'm nuts for not jumping on it.

I think may of the fans would say no vaccine, but I (and I know this is not a popular opinion) say yes. My neurotypical son got the disease and was sicker than he has ever been-in the hospital for almost a week.

I believe what the mainstream medical community tells me. Vaccines do not cause autism.
There, I've said it.

For us, it wasn't a matter of vaccines causing autism. My husband is a doctor and his concern is that the vaccine hasn't been tested enough...though how much is enough? (hubby is on the spectrum)..lol None of us got it.

Jessica Lacourse

Jessica Lacourse has a 4 year old step daughter who was recently diagnosed with autism. I'm having a hard time finding the proper resources to help her - her school can't do much except give her three additional hours of classes, and her doctor's aren't returning my phone calls. Anyone have any tips on what to do now? What can I do to ...make things easier for her? I just want to make life go as smoothly as possible, but I'm so lost. I'm pretty much the only person who takes care of her because her father works 80 hours a week and her mom isn't in the picture. I'm so stressed out, and I have a two year old to take care of as well. If anyone is going through something similiar, please add me.

AHHHH! I hate that doectors are not returning your calls. Where do you live? I'll try to help.
The way it is supposed to work is this:
Your pediatrician should be the "Quarterback"-should help you put together a team (developmental pediatrician, behaviorist, speech therapist, OT, PT etc.) The team (including you) outs a treatment plan together. That is a start. If you tell me where you live I'll try to point you in the right direction.

Gina Coats

Gina Coats To make matters worse, my oldest child was in a car accident two years ago and she has a traumatic brain injury. I am home caring for her and she is unable to communicate or do anything for herself. I am a single mom. The stress is so overwhelming but out of the two problems, dealing with the Aspergers is the most stre...ssful because people are unsympethetic to Chloe's behaviors and offer unsolicited advice about dealing with her behaviors.

Gina Coats She has awkward motor skills, gastrointestinal problems, co-morbidity with ADHD and OCD and bouts of sadness and she cannot even begin to write or color like a child without this problem. She is extremely aggressive and even though she loves me, she is prone to "knocking" me out when the mood strikes her. Her sensitivi...tes to texture and sound is extremely exegerrated and she eats food by color and look . She cannot sleep without heavy medication and has abnormal fears and nightmares. She is only 4 and can only imagine what I am in for as she gets older.

Gina Coats I have a 4 year old daughter who has Asperger's. I am the one who noticed that her development was not on target and that she was having some problems that were out of the normal "range" although most people would call them typical behaviors. Her doctor diagnosed her with Aspergers and then her neurologist and then the... psychologist and the psychiatrist. She is in a Pre K program but the school will not recognize that she has Asperger's because she has shown "empathy". I have worked with her and showed her how to smile and what a "sad" face is etc... I am not sure that the "empathy" is as meaningful to her as it is to people without asperger's. She has a wonderful vocabulary but even its development was delayed. Her behaviors are very severe and in a regular classroom and riding the regular bus, they have regular expectations.

if he's not gluten-free that would also cause spontaneous weight gain. the allergy can kick into higher gear at around that age.

Victoria Maria van Pelt Does anyone know to get a child to stop saying no when they need to say yes? My son says no and then the answer that he really means which is terrible for many new people he works with and sometimes confusing for us when we are tired. He never used to do this and we're not sure how to teach him to say what he means as ...yes and no are hard to explain sometimes, other want and don't want.

I have many students that do that... What I have done is when I ask them a question, I say the question... "do you want more juice?" and then I say YES... and they repeat me. If they don't want what ever it is you will know and then that gives you the opportunity to work with no appropriately too. After a while they will understand and pick up on ... See Morethe ques. Also, if they say no to something that they want and you take it away it won't take long for them to understand the concept. I have students who in the beginning said no to everything and after a while they learned to answer correctly.
