Andree Robinson-Neal

Andree Robinson-Neal am frustrated with my 14 year old today. Why does lying come so easy when telling the truth would actually make life easier for him? Counseling hasn't convinced him, punishment makes no difference. Am tired and saddened :(

When I was eight years old, Uncle Russell came to visit. He was my mother’s cousin, but everyone called him Uncle Russell. He was twenty years old and had a severe case of cerebral palsy.

My Alex has taken to calling himself "Mr Underwear Boy", I have decided that he is a superhero for sensory sensitive kids who refuse to wear clothes when they are at home! Thankfully he does not fight clothing when we are out of the house and at least he keeps the underwear on! Choose your battles wisely . . . .

It is a great book. Laura has the ability to bring you into the moment as she tells her story with her unique way of describing her feelings and sharing her inner thoughts. I have come to love this family and I feel part of it already.

Jessica Hughes Kerr

Jessica Hughes Kerr I am having a hard time when I hear people use the “R” word so flippantly. One person I read today said that their favorite quote from a movie was, "You never go full retard." Any words of wisdom on how I can not get so affended by peoples ignorance.

Using "retarded" as an insult is offensive, for sure. But I don't feel that using it to explain my son's dx is a problem. The shame is on those who use it pejoratively. Still, I have gone up to strangers who use it the way you mention, and I've said, "You seem like a nice person. You shouldn't use that word."

I always approach those whose ignorance keep them from realizing how painful it has been to accept other labels that will hunt us forever, and also warn them to be careful with their words. As I tell my son at least 10 times a day, I tell them "use your nice words with others, you have choices, use them wisely", or, as Susan said "you sure seem ... Also, I take every opportunity to create awareness. Don't take it personal, most of us could not tell the difference either at one point in our lives. Be strong, keep your focus!

Valerie Bergbreiter Hurst My 6 year old son was diagnosed with severe ADHD and PPD-NOS--how do you parent and discipline a child like this. He gets so aggressive and emotional I don't know how to handle it--any advice would be great! I feel like I am failing at all that I am trying and end up in tears myself quite often!

I use time out and social stories for EVERYTHING. Spanking in our case only exacerbates things. Always remember to stay consistent to the time-out and do not address them while they are in time-out. Discipline is so tricky with my son but I took a class on challeging behavior and enforcing positive and negative consequence works. My son knows that ... Thank you so very much for creating your website and for signing up to facebook. I read your blog on the Autism Facebook Page that I became a fan of and was fascinated by it. I was so happy to read that you were able to find a school for your son to attend that would allow him to live out his dreams of gardening and la...ndscaping and where he would be accepted. I have a son with high functing Autism and I have fought for him since he was a baby and was behind in his speech and then in the school system. Once again, thank you so much for sharing this very encouraging and helpful facebook page.Read More

Dee Dee Carrier Harnish

Dee Dee Carrier Harnish I was wondering if anyone is concerned about giving flu shots to their austistic child, including the H1N1 shot? I know these shots contain thimiserol which at one time was linked to the cause of autism. They say that studies since show that not to be the case. Anyway, I have reservations nontheless...

I have read enough to decide I am not going to give one to my autistic son .. I will take care of him the best I can and deal with the illness if I have to but do not want to do the vaccine at this point

I have read a lot of research that says the opposite of what the previous commenters have said. I do not believe that there is a connection between vaccinations and autism. I would rather have my child be safe and healthy than to make a misinformed decision. Plus if the child is already diagnosed with autism what would it hurt. It's not going to make them more autistic.
