Volunteers are one of the gems of the nonprofit world and are an invaluable asset to making connections in the community, raising funds, and getting day-to-day work done. Board members and campaign volunteers are two of the best resources for bringing in new gifts...

If volunteers aren’t following through on what you’re asking, then maybe it’s time to visit with the volunteer to see if they are still having a “joyful” volunteer experience with your organization. I find by keeping up with my volunteers on their interests or learning what they enjoy about their volunteer experiences at other organizations helps me better understand how they can help my non-profit and where best their expertise fits.

Ok, so I’m getting excited about a new idea. Who would get excited about all of us together starting an online community where we promote each other’s online fundraising? Would you be willing to commit to comment and vote for each other to win/raise money for your organization...

I spend a significant amount of time trying to get a hold of people and have a few different techniques that I’ve used to do so. I’d love to hear back from you if you have any additional tools or ideas. Just leave a comment below with your technique...

One of the most important elements in motivating co-workers is building an environment that celebrates success. I’m not talking about a little cheer when you get a big gift (although that works for some people). We need to take regular time to talk about what is going well and why...

50 States for Good program (submitted by Devin Kingdon) “Through the 50 States for Good program, the company is now asking its consumers to help decide what projects around the country should receive the company’s financial support...

I have really enjoyed hearing from all of you regarding these questions. The last couple we have received some really great answers about Creative Events Ideas and Fundraising Ethics...

Working in fundraising is all about staying motivated by your mission to help your cause. As I have spoken about in other posts sometimes you hit a wall and you have to keep pushing...

Here is a secret I use and I’ve seen others way more intelligent and experienced than I use to get a result they like. All of us have ideas or projects we would like to see happen that seem to get “shut down” immediately or before we can even start to get people excited about them...

Stories are what keep donors connected to the organization, help them fall in love with our work, and motivate them to volunteer and give. Finding stories has become one of the most satisfying and encouraging things that I have done...

Information is always more powerful when it is connected to real people. My boss reminded me of this just the other day. In writing an e-newsletter instead of just presenting facts I was encouraged to weave in key messages and stories...

The featured fundraiser this month is Sylvia Allen of Sylvia’s Children. Sylvia’s Children is a 501 (c) 3 that works with school children in Uganda. What keeps you going? Why do you keep working in development? I have a goal of making a difference in children’s lives through education...

Philanthropy has become more than gifts to charity and is now a form of self expression. This can be best seen as businesses have started to use philanthropy to sell their products and improve their world...

Participating in a post exchange on embedded Philanthropy and would love to hear your thoughts on this post. It is less "broad" in terms of fundraising advice and is more opinion.

If there is one thing I’ve learned about fundraising managers it is that they love to pass on their knowledge. Almost every person that has been in the nonprofit world for any number of years can tell you stories of an old boss that was too hyper-critical or micro-managed...

Those that are the very best at fundraising understand how to make their donors, volunteers, board, and staff feel like the most important thing in the world. Fundraisers constantly are doing what they can to accommodate other people...

Earlier this week I made a case for us to spend more time talking to our donors instead of talking about our donors. Today, I’m going to talk about a tool I’ve used to talk about my donors improving those conversations and making them more efficient and effective...

Every time you look in your email box doesn’t it feel like there is another invitation for a new online social community? Should you promote your organization on Facebook or Myspace? Is Plaxo or LinkedIn the best tool for business networking...

I love intelligent comments on my posts that disagree with what I have to say because it brings so much more wisdom to the table. A while back a reader commented on, Trouble with Facebook, mentioning that Lil Green Patch has had incredible success with this social networking site...

Mark of Distinction Until June 30th Markham Winery is holding a contest awarding two people $25,000 to accomplish a project in their city. You can nominate someone or submit a proposal on their website. On July 27th, 10 projects will be chosen and posted on their website...

Over the last number of weeks I’ve had the privilege of coaching a few people on social media. Web 2.0 and social networking are currently catch phrases and “in” topics right now; however, most people and nonprofits are still at the very beginning of understanding and harnessing their power...

Yesterday was the first part of this month’s Featured Fundraiser Cass Wheeler. Here is part two of that post. What is the most frustrating or difficult thing about fund development? Being a good fund raiser requires a sales and a management mentality. Every call on a donor is a sales call...

This month’s Featured Fundraiser is Cass Wheeler, CEO of the American Heart Association and author of a great new book, You’ve Gotta Have Heart. What kind of fundraising do you do and who do you do it for...

A Small Change- Fundraising Blog Any feedback on the recent guest author on the last couple posts?

As I mentioned in the last post I am considering bringing a guest expert on as a regular basis please email me any feedback or thoughts on today’s author. Enjoy the second part of Tim’s article...

I am considering bringing a guest expert on as a regular basis please email me any feedback or thoughts on today’s author. The next couple posts are by Tim Troutman from Charlotte Rescue Mission, and he is an individual passionate about donor data...

Recently I had a friend ask me for help raising money with his workplace. And I thought I’d share some of the ideas here. I was really encouraged to hear from a business leader who is looking for proactive and creative ways to raise money in his office...

Last month I did a question on “Fundraising Ethics” and I got such great feedback that I thought I’d try it again (This question was submitted by reader Sarah Kaiser). Question: What are some new event & fundraising ideas you’ve given volunteers or heard volunteers using...

Sometimes we don’t clean up our database because we do not know how it works. It is important to have one person in your organization that is your database person. This person is often the individual that inputs your checks and cash into the system...

Every nonprofit I’ve ever worked for struggles to clean up and update their donor database. This happens because we get distracted and have so much to do, we do not understand how the database works, or a million other reasons. But we cannot lose sight of why a clean database is important...
