A post from Robin Titterington: it's time for another ALDAnonymous question: you do NOT have to
be an ALDA member to make a submission. Of course if you want to see your
wise words in print then . . . . !!! Your submissions should be sent to
aldanonymous@gmail.com (NOTE: the address in ALDA NEWS is incorrect) And
of co...urse they will be printed . . . anonymously! No one will see your
address other than Bill Graham and myself, co-curators.
SO, here's the question: "Has the rapid expansion of online methods of
communicaion--such as email, IM, internet shopping, VRS and VP-- affected
you in any way socially or psychologically when you are offline?"

When we got ALDA going, if we found a deafened adult we would keep their name on the mailing list whether or not they ever responded or paid dues. Most people who become deaf in midlife don't want to have anything to do with deaf stuff for many years or forever. All you can do is keep your hand out and be there. And it... was really neat when one of these people would show up out of the blue at a party or by way of a letter. Online networking makes it easier to keep the hand extended because there are no postage costs, which can get in the way of "doing the right thing." It's a fascinating and promising environment because passive members of the group are exposed to that invisible hand in an unthreatening way on a far more frequent basis.
