AOPA Flight Training Magazine says it's never too late to learn to fly. Kudos to Valeria Valiquette of Montana (another Montana gal!) who got her private pilot certificate last week at age 72.

AOPA Flight Training Magazine says Congratulations! to Heidi Heiland of Montana, who soloed five aircraft on her 16th birthday this week! Be sure and share your solos here. Even if you didn't make the local newspaper, it's still a great accomplishment!

Very Cool! The article author said he didn't think anyone else had done this before but a boy from Californoia also soloed 5 back in Aug. He supposedly has a world record, so I guess Heidi has tied it!

Oh my, this student soloed 9 planes back in 1977:

A lot of inspiration for aspiring pilots! So what is the world record for solos? Anyone know?

Read and learn as much as possible before each and every lesson. I try to anticipate as much of what my instructor is going to teach me. This way I am applying knowledge instead of learning concepts and applying them at the same time.

At the end of every flight I write down any concepts, maneuvers or things I was foggy on this way I don't ... Read Moreforget anything. I go home and research all of those points and email my instructor any questions I have. On my next lesson I have a small list of things I am hoping to cover and/or practice.

I feel this approach gets me the most bang for my dime and is hopefully reducing the required hours I will need to get my license.

AOPA Flight Training Magazine is curious about iPhone apps. Which ones do you use specifically for flight training? What are your thoughts on iPhone apps as a learning tool?

Paolo Custodio

Paolo Custodio I just started my PPL training and I want to subscribe to this awesome mag. The thing is Im from Canada and it looks like I cant get that student pilot deal for 19 bucks. I have to pay 60 instead. Looks like it would be cheaper to just buy the mag from my local pilot shop every month. Are there any other options for me to actually save money by subscribing?

I don't think so Paolo. Unfortunately international postage keeps the price high. But keep checking back with us because I think you'll see a few good options for this in the future.

Tom Little

Tom Little I'm not actively pursuing my training at this time. I suspended my lessons prior to my first Dual X-C due to financial reasons. Thanks AOPA Flight Training Magazine for keeping me yearning for the freindly skies! Though I stand on the sidelines observing, I look forward to getting back in the game.

Thanks Tom. We hope you're able to start again soon. It can be tough to overcome the money hurdle, but I'm sure all pilots will agree it's worth it when you do.

I'm sorry to hear your reason that stands between you & flight. My husband & I just purchased a Sonex kit. It's half built. I hope we can maintain a budget that will allow us to finish the project & lift off. Stay focused on your priorities & you will find a way to fly again. Friends are great. Flying together or partnership is half the finances.
