ASL Tales

ASL Tales
Do you love storytelling? We are looking for ASL student storytellers to create their own versions of our first two books, ASL Tales: The Princess and the Pea and ASL Tales: Rapunzel.

Our books come with DVDs designed for young children and new signers. We invite you to create and submit your own translations of The Pri...ncess and the Pea and Rapunzel for inclusion in our ASL Tales Storytellers’ Collection.

Who we are looking for:

* Deaf or hard-of-hearing middle and high school storytellers

What we are looking for:

* Your translation of one or both of our books.
* An ASL translation. Your storytelling should consider the meaning of the book, looking beyond the surface English text. We are looking for translations that represent the way the story would be told in ASL.

NOTE: Adults may give support for understanding the English meaning. However, translations must be created by the student.

* All of the ideas and elements in the books should be included in your ASL video. You may alter the order of ideas on each page, but the order of the story should match the text on each page. You may use the illustrations to supplement the ASL video.
* Something different than the translation already created by Pinky and Alisha.
* Your IMAGINATION AND CREATIVITY!

NOTE: We prefer that the story be told without breaks. You will not be penalized if there are splices in the video.

How to apply:

* You will need a copy of the book/DVD. If your school does not have a copy, you can request an electronic version of the book by sending an email to contest@asltales.net. Type “Storytelling Contest” in the subject line.
* You may send a mini DV tape or upload an electronic version directly to our server. Videos should be mailed with the enclosed application form to: ASL Tales Storytellers’ Contest, 25 NW 23rd Place ste 6 #293, Portland, Or egon 97211 Deadline for submissions is June 10, 2009.
* Label each submission both on the packaging and in the video. You may use a character generator or simply write your contact information and display it in the video.
* To upload an electronic copy of your story, send a request for instructions to contest@asltales.net with “Storytelling Contest” in the subject line.

If you win:

o We will arrange for you to make a studio recording of your translation.
o Your video will be included in the ASL Tales Storytellers’ Collection: The Princess and the Pea or the ASL Tales Storytellers’ Collection: Rapunzel DVDs sold on our website.
o You will receive two award plaques: one for your home and one for your school.
o 50% of the profits from the DVD will be donated to the Deaf Bilingual Coalition (DBC).

“The Deaf Bilingual Coalition promotes the basic human right of all Deaf infants and young children to have access to language through American Sign Language. The DBC campaigns to ensure that the parents of Deaf children are supported by receiving information from qualified Deaf professionals and mentors as early as possible regarding American Sign Language; its excellence in cultivating bilingualism -- ASL and English and its role in cognitive, social, and emotional development. The DBC advocates for optimal programs and schools that are inclusive of ASL and which maximize a Deaf child's potential and inherent dignity as human beings.” Check: www.dbcusa.org

ASL Tales is whole new way of approaching story books. The stories are not translated from the English or from the ASL, rather new and old stories were written by native users of both languages working together to create stories that honor both languages’ expressive strong points. ...
