Online 7-Week Course through CDSP (Episcopal Seminary in Berkeley)
Fall Session: October 26 - December 20, 2009

There has been a dramatic rise in interest in Benedictine spirituality in recent years. It offers the contemporary world a set of ancient Christian practices which call... us to contemplative ways of being in a world of doing, to live into rhythms rooted in the natural rise and fall of the day, and to greater presence to the holy moments of our lives. In this course we will explore, experience, and discuss three essential practices: lectio divina (sacred reading), centering prayer, and praying the Hours of the day. Each practice is a thread that weaves together with the others to create a tapestry in which we begin to see everything as sacred.

Contemplative Ways of Being in the World
Time:9:00AM Monday, October 26th
Location:Online Class through CALL at Church Divinity School of the Pacific

taught by Christine Valters Paintner, PhD

Course Description:

Monastic spirituality offers the contemporary world a set of ancient practices, deeply rooted in the Christian tradition, which are profoundly counter-cultural and offer s life-giving ways for being in the world. They call us to contemplative ways of being in ...a hurried world, to welcome in the stranger as Christ in an age of increasing fear of the other, to a commitment to rootedness in a time of mobility, and to a healthy asceticism in response to the worship of consumerism.

In this course we will briefly explore the roots of Christian monastic tradition, especially in its Benedictine form. The main focus of our time will be an examination and critical
appropriation of monastic practices and virtues through reading, discussion, experience, and reflection. We will consider the Liturgy of the Hours, lectio divina, contemplative prayer, creating a Rule of Life, hospitality, humility, asceticism, a balance of work and prayer,
community and solitude, and the vows of conversion, stability and obedience as ways to ground a spiritual life that nurtures justice. The course will also examine some of the flourishing contemporary, ecumenical movements such as Oblates and “new monasticism,” as well as implications of monastic spirituality for healthy ministry, and openings for dialogue with other religious traditions.

Lectio divina (sacred reading) is an ancient Christian practice that allows us to enter into silence and let the depths of scripture speak to our hearts. Moving from silent prayer into various forms of creative expression can offer remarkable insights into the images stirring within. Participants will be guided in the ...practice of lectio divina and then in accessible art-making focused on the process and the journey of discovery. The retreat will focus on this rhythm of contemplation and creativity and the insights it offers us into the active movement of God in our lives. No previous experience with lectio divina or the arts is necessary.

Sponsored by MAGIS: Alumni Committed for Mission

Facilitated by Maria Thompson, MA and Christine Valters Paintner, PhD

Change in life is an ever present constant. Moment by moment, the life within us emerges as patterns and movements of being that shape who we are and who we are becoming. This three-day retreat is design...ed to help participants engage these movements of transition and change using ancient spiritual practices that attune awareness to the rhythms of the hours and seasons. As living metaphors, winter, spring, summer and fall and the 24-hour day offer natural consciousness raising possibilities about the movements of life. Through an evocative pairing of ancient and contemporary prayer encounters with seasons and hours, participants will be given the opportunity to explore life practices that can help them engage change and transition with grace, presence and intention. Silence and group reflection times will be woven throughout the weekend.

A Retreat for Jesuit Alumni, Friends, and Family
Time:7:00PM Friday, May 8th
Location:Seattle University
Abbey of the Arts

Abbey of the Arts
with Betsey Beckman, MM and Christine Valters Paintner, PhD

A five-day experiential intensive exploring tools for integrating the ARTS and IMAGINATION into spiritual direction and other healing ministries.

Our encounters with the holy are rooted in symbol and image and speak the language of dreams. Spiritual direction te...nds to these encounters and can be deeply enhanced by tools that invite listening to and engaging the inner symbolic life. The focus of this program is on developing the skills of working with the arts and imagination to deepen the work of spiritual direction.

Together we will explore how the healing power of such tools as guided imagery, body awareness, dream work, ritual, poetry, journal writing, visual art, movement, song, and storytelling enrich our own spiritual lives and our work in spiritual direction by giving us access to another language with which to encounter the divine presence within. Participants will develop comfort and skills in using these tools. The program consists of didactic input and time for discussion and reflection on how we see using the arts concretely in our work as spiritual directors. Also appropriate for counselors, chaplains, teachers, and others in healing ministries who want to integrate the arts into their work.

Absolutely no previous art experience necessary — only a willingness to awaken the creative spirit within!

$1200 Program Fee includes all lodging, meals, instruction, art supplies, and extensive handouts.
