It is estimated that Americans lost about $8 trillion in home values and savings between 2007 and 2009. At least 100 banks failed across the country in less than two years, costing taxpayers billions. The unemployment rate hovered around 10%, while many others could only find part-time work or jobs that were unrelated ...to their business skills.
Throughout this forum we will discuss three different approaches about how we can take charge of our future.
1. We need to pay attention to our money.
2. My prosperity depends on everyone's prosperity.
3. It's families and community that provide economic security.

This forum will discuss the issue of "Coping with the Cost of Health Care: How do we pay for what we need?" Participants will discuss three different ways to think about this topic: 1) reduce the threat of financial ruin, 2) restrain out-of-control costs and 3) provide coverage as a right.
This forum will be used as pa...rt of a research project. Two graduate students at the Institute for Civic Discourse and Democracy (ICDD) are looking into this idea of how media depictions of health care become a part of deliberative discourse. In this research, they are searching for questions about deliberation and if it is insulated from negative civic discourse or the impact of the media and how it may impact our judgement.

The Eisenhower Presidential Library and the Abilene Public Library annual book talk series continues with a panel discussion on historian Stephen Ambrose. The program begins on Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. in the Visitors Center Auditorium at the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum.
The author of more than 20 books, Ambrose... emerged in the 1990s as one of America’s most popular historians. “Given his popularity and name recognition with the general public, it’s fair to say Ambrose is the ‘people’s historian’,” said Dr. Jim Leyerzapf who recently retired from the Eisenhower Presidential Library after 37 years of service. Leyerzapf will appear on the discussion panel along with fellow Library retiree David Haight and Lon Schrader, Director of Public Works for the City of Abilene and avid reader.
