VICTORIA, BC – The First Annual Victoria Latin Jazz Festival is set to take place February 20-22, 2009. The Festival will feature performances by two of Canada’s leading personalities in Latin Jazz, a Percussion Master Class and an Open Jam Session.

This three-day festival will kick off on Friday, February 21st with Ju...no award winning soprano saxophonist, flutist and bandleader Jane Bunnett & The Spirits of Havana. They will perform at Hermann’s Jazz Club starting at 8:00PM. Backing Bunnett will be a line-up of world-renowned musicians including Larry Kramer - Trumpet, and Cuban Artists Elio Villa Franco - Piano, Francisco Mela - Drums, and Yunior Terry - Bass.

The second day of the festival, Saturday, February 21st, will include a Latin Jazz percussion workshop at Long & McQuade, 2:00PM, featuring Jane Bunnett & The Spirits of Havana and Cuban percussionists Gilberto Moreaux, Francisco Mela, and Adonis Puentes.

In the evening Adonis Puentes and His Latin Ensemble will be performing at Hermann’s Jazz Club, 8:00PM. Adonis will be presenting his original music as well as some Cuban traditional songs. The musicians joining Puentes will include special guests Cuban percussionist Gilberto Moreaux, Tijuana based Jazz Pianist Turiya Mareya, and local artists Saxophonist Noah Becker, Bassist Sean Drabbit, and Panamanian Percussionist Humberto Mendoza.

The Festival will close on Sunday, February 22nd with an Open Jam Session and Dance at Hermann’s Jazz Club, 6:00PM. Bring your instruments and Jam with the musicians who performed in the Festival. The Jam is also open to those who just want to come out and enjoy the last of the Latin Jazz sounds, or those who want to dance to the Latin Rhythms. Celebrate the wrap up of the Festival and party with the musicians.
