NEW YORK TIMES: The writer-director James DeMonaco is a native Staten Islander, and if his film Staten Island is an ode to what it calls the forgotten stepchild of Manhattan, it is a barbed and quirky one. Using a nonlinear narrative, Mr. DeMonaco adroitly weaves violence, absurdity and sentiment..., even an environmental consciousness, into a modest, appealing fable.
VARIETY: there's enough originality and verve in DeMonacos' debut to make for compelling viewing... with pleasingly off-kilter sequences...and weirdly European vibe to it... And a touchingly expressive Seymour Cassel.
LOS ANGELES TIMES: ...writer-director James DeMonaco's droll, stylish crime gewgaw "Staten Island" wrings suspenseful and comic pleasures out of a time-bending format...there's an endearingly expressive Seymour Cassel as a lonely deaf mute butcher whose ties to Sully (Hawke) and Palmetto (Donofrio) lead him down a gruesome yet strangely redemptive path. The tonal idiosyncrasies may grate early on but things coalesce nicely until the whole thing starts to resemble a diverting short story.
