West Africa is all about culture and music! Youssou N'Dour is arguably Africa's most famous musician, and a new documentary showcases the making of his album, Egypt:
"Youssou N'Dour: I Bring What I Love is a music-infused cinematic journey about the power of one man’s voice to inspire change. One of Time magazine’s 100 ...most influential people in the world and called “the rare rock star whose music matters,” Senegalese singer Youssou Ndour is beloved internationally and at home. In 2005, the Grammy-winning artist defied expectations and produced his most personal album, Egypt, presenting his Islamic faith as a peaceable and tolerant religion. While the record received international acclaim, it was denounced as blasphemy in his native Senegal.

Angel Island is a gem right here in the Bay Area. With great hiking trails, a fascinating history, and spectacular views of San Francisco, Mount Tam and the East Bay. It's a great place for a picnic, a hike, and, for those who want to learn more about the history, a visit to the newly opened Immigration Station.*
And w...ith talk of parks possibly closing due to budget cuts, now seems like a GREAT time to go and experience / support such a great local resource!
Come join us!!
We can meet for a picnic lunch at 12:30 (bring a sandwich, or pick something up from the cafe on the island). While we eat we can talk about the island's history, first as a hunting and fishing site for Coastal Miwok Indians, and later as the West Coast equivalent of Ellis Island, where hundreds of thousands of mostly Chinese immigrants were held prior to being allowed to enter the USA. And let's also take the opportunity to look West towards Asia and discuss any trip plans or ideas we have for our next adventure!
