Starti...ng at 7:30 p.m., Galileo: Contributions and Challenges will highlight Galileo’s contributions to physics and astronomy as well as the challenges he faced after announcing that Earth is not at the center of the universe. Dr. Spencer Buckner of Austin Peay State University will discuss Galileo’s impact on science and Presbyterian minister Rev. David Kidd will talk about Galileo and the Inquisition.
BSAS and Americans United for the Separation of Church and State are offering this program as part of the International Year of Astronomy (IYA) celebrating 400 years of the telescope since Galileo made his first observations in 1609. Speaking not just as a conservation leader, but as a parent and grandparent, Larry Schweiger, President and CEO of the National Wildlife Federation, will speak at Adventure Science Center about climate change and its effects on wildlife, ecosystems and human life. Schweiger's recent book Last Chance: Preserving Life on... Earth breaks down the science of climate change. After a special presentation from Schweiger, he will sign copies of his book, which will be available in the science center gift shop that evening.
