In general, the conditions in African prisons are painfully poor. Many are severely overcrowded, lack sanitation and are unable to provide adequate nutrition.
Prison sentences can be significantly longer than in developed countries and it is not unusual to spend long periods in prison without trial.
African Prisons Project aims restore the dignity of prisoners by providing humane conditions and improving welfare, access to medical facilities and the opportunity to learn.
African Prisons Project is in urgent need of funding. Donations will be gratefully received on the night. More info at: www.africanprisons.org
There will also be homemade Ugandan food so come early with friends and feast!

African Prisons Project
Dear all,
What are you doing on Saturday, 28th March? Would you like to help with an exciting and enjoyable fundraising event for a The African Prison Project?
APP needs your help. We need enthusiastic volunteers like you to help raise funds on the streets around Borough Market on a busy Saturday. You'll be put in teams ...of four or five (each team will have a full-time APP volunteer to answer any questions) and sent off to collect spare coins from the market shoppers. We'll kit you out with donation buckets, a typical Ugandan 'prison uniform' (yellow t-shirt with APP logo) and an official name badge. Oh, and you may even be handcuffed to your friend! The atmosphere around Borough Market on a Saturday is always fun and lively; you'll be a part of the action - but helping a real cause at the same time.
APP has just started work on the construction of a healthcare centre at a prison in northern Uganda. The centre will allow imprisoned mothers to give birth outside of prison and then care for the newborns. It will serve not just the prisoners themselves (whose health is otherwise forgotten), but also the guards and the entire local community. The total cost of the centre is around £40,000 and we already have two-thirds of the money. Can you help us raise the rest?
If you sign up, we have to ask for £5 from you to help us buy the t-shirts, buckets and promotional material. But it's well worth it: a fiver for a whole day's fun isn't possible anywhere else in London! I'll also need your place confirmed by Friday 20th March. Once you've signed up you'll receive a fundraising pack with all the information you'll need - and there'll even be a briefing session on the morning of the day to get you up to scratch.
Please forward this email to your friends if you think they might be interested. Maybe they too can help APP improve the lives of children in prison. For more info about APP, visit www.africanprisons.org.
If you have any questions or would like to sign up please email Adam Smith at adamsmith@africanprisons.org.
An amazing opportunity to help raise desperately needed funds for APP while having a brilliant day out!

African Prisons Project We've won the opportunity to pitch at a special event that aims to make the process of charitable giving more fun. As such, it's in a bar on Brick Lane. People come along to hear short pitches from three charities (including APP!). If attendees want to donate time or money, they're more than welcome. Otherwise, it's a ...fun opportunity to hear about interesting charity work. Please come along and support APP!
