Christopher, A. N., Furnham, A., Batey, M., Martin, G. N., Koenig, C. S., & Doty, K. (2010). Protestant Ethic Endorsement, Personality, and General Intelligence. Learning and Individual Differences, 20(1), 46-50. Abstract: To learn if Protestant ethic endorsement predicted intelligence controlling for the big five personality factors, 364 college students from England and the United States completed a 65-item multifaceted work ethic endorsement measure, the 50-item Wonderlic Personnel Test, and a 60-item measure of the big five personality factors. A hierarchical multiple regression revealed that, after controlling for respondent’s sex and the big five, work ethic facets accounted for 5.6% of the variability in Wonderlic scores. However, the direction of the relationship between PWE facets and Wonderlic scores depended on the PWE facet in question. Furthermore, the facets accounted for more variability than did a composite work ethic score. The discussion focuses on the multidimensional nature of PWE endorsement and future research with this construct. Read more >> |

Malcomnson, K. M., Christopher, A. N., Franzen, T., & Keyes, B. J. (2006). The Protestant Work Ethic, Religious Beliefs, and Homonegative Attitudes. Mental Health, Religion & Culture, 9(5), 435-447. Abstract: The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of the Protestant Work Ethic (PWE) on negative attitudes towards gay men and lesbian women (homonegativity). The influence of religious beliefs and the notion of homosexuality as a choice were also examined in combination with PWE in regards to homonegativity. Previous research suggested that those who subscribe to the PWE have more negative attitudes towards societal out-groups (e.g., African-Americans). Thus, it was hypothesized that those with high PWE scores would display more homonegative attitudes. A significant correlation between PWE and homonegativity supported this hypothesis. Multiple regression analyses revealed that PWE interacted with religious beliefs, and religious beliefs interacted marginally with the idea of homosexuality as a choice. Those with high religious beliefs and who strongly believed that homosexuality was a choice were more likely to have negative attitudes towards homosexuals. The implications of these findings are discussed, with particular respect to reducing homonegative attitudes. Read more >> |

twinning were the most widely observed deformation modes in both orientations. Nonprismatic slip systems were also activated, most likely to accommodate local strain heterogeneities. A slip-stimulated twin nucleation mechanism was identified for soft/hard grain pairs: dislocation slip in a soft-oriented grain can stimulate twin nucleation in the neighboring hard grain when the slip system is well aligned with the twinning system. This alignment was described by a slip-transfer parameter m′.[24] Twins activated by this mechanism always had the highest m′ value among the six available
twinning systems, while the Schmid factor, based on the global (uniaxial tensile) stress state, was a less significant indicator of twin activity. Through slip transfer, deformation twins sometimes formed despite having a very low global Schmid factor. The frequency of slip-stimulated twin nucleation depends strongly on the texture and loading direction in the material. For grain pairs having one grain with a large Schmid factor for twinning, nonparametric statistical analysis confirms that those with a larger m′ are more likely to display slip-stimulated twinning.
