American Women Veterans From this week's Economist. In the next few months, women will make up 50% of the American workforce, while our military remains about 85% male. What do you think about this report? Respectful discussions encouraged... http://www.economist.com/displayStory.cfm?Story_ID=15174489

The rich world’s quiet revolution: women are gradually taking over the workplace

Kate, that's fantastic and I'm happy for you. I could also outrun and do more pushups than many men in my Squadron. When I was 7 months pregnant with my son I was still lapping men routinely during our Squadron runs. As a 120 lb/5'4 female though, I know that I would be detrimental in a situation that required an extreme amount of physical ... See Morestrength from me. You can't deny that the majority of women in the military are not physically as strong as men. I never said no women were capable of it but there are simply too many jobs in the military that MOST women are not physically capable of doing. THIS is why men out number women in the military.

I feel like I need to make it clear that by saying the things below, I am in NO WAY diminishing women as a whole or their contribution to the military. We, as women, are in my opinion, by far the superior gender ;). I dare any man to strap a 50lb weight to their stomach and carry that thing around 24hrs a day (to include a 3-5 mile run). Then ... See Morethey also have to wear combat boots and the most uncomfortable pants ever created, all while continuing to perform you daily duties at work and home.
Seriously though, as women, I feel we may have some physical limitations but we more than make up for it with all the other things we do bring to the table. Just because I can't bench press as much as you or fireman carry a 200lb man out of the field doesn't mean I, as a woman, am less worthy to serve. It does mean, however, that there are some roles that I may not be able to fill. The military just happens to have, by its very nature, a lot of these roles.

American Women Veterans Don't forget about our Co-Ed Outdoor Adventure Trips for OIF/OEF Vets! Spread the word!

*This trip is now open to all OIF/OEF Veterans* Are you a Veteran of Operations Iraqi or Enduring Freedom? If so, American Women Veterans in partnership with Outward Bound is sponsoring a free, all-expenses paid outdoor adventure...

American Women Veterans
All, Ladies. We honor each and everyone's service, be they from Operation Restore Hope, Vietnam, Gulf War and the Cold War. ALL eras, ALL conflicts, including peacetime.

This particular program is courtesy of Outward Bound, who we partner with to offer programs to veterans. These programs typically cost approximately $2,000 per person (depending on the trip) and the Sierra Club made generous donations to Outward Bound to sponsor OIF/OEF veterans. That is why these trips are free to these vets.

Unfortunately, at this time, AWV does not have the funding to cover the costs of all vets attending these trips. We hope to be able to do so one day. ... See More

We were faced with the difficult decision of offering these trips only to those we could, or to none at all in the spirit of "fairness."

We decided that we should offer them and reach out to as many vets as we can, as we are able.

I personally apologize for not being able to offer this to all. I hope you will understand.

Additionally, if anyone would like to make a donation specifically for this program, or would like to attend and pay their own costs, we will accommodate and would welcome it.

Best,

I have a friend whom I'd love to nominate: Kallie Linder. She owns her own salon (not a big deal, I know), but she also is a resource for the Wig Closet (I think it's called), that give wigs away to women who have lost their hair to cancer. She does free hair cuts at the Relay for Life. She took her family (including little kids) to pack food boxes... See More and gifts for the Christmas boxes and baskets that were delivered to the less fortunate. She is smart, beautiful, funny, caring, kind and an inspiration to all who know her. She's not a veteran, but all of my veteran girlfriends go to her.

Agreed. In Santa Cruz, Ca where I had been living for over a decade, I was afraid to speak about being a Veteran. When I finally hit the PTSD wall, I discovered that I was not the only Veteran afraid. All these Vientam Vet guys were afraid and were going to the PTSD Group because of it.

That's really cool! I live in a reserve town; but not a base town. I've often wondered how reserve/guard kids feel about their situation because it seems like they don't have the same experience maybe as base kids. I hope that made sense, LOL! I grew up near a base and the atmosphere just seemed different compared to where I live now.

I grew up right next to Wright Patterson Air Force Base and my ponytail baseball team would play ball with the kids that lived in what they called Page Manor where they were the families of the lower ranking enlisted personal. Many of the kids did not have gloves so when that team was in the outfield we would lend them our gloves. I was on that team over 4 years and I never saw the same kids from the base from season to season.
