Alexia Tate debuts her new
solo cabaret show, “Take Me As I Am,” at The Duplex Cabaret Theatre on
Thursday, October 9, with pianist Bartosz Hadala. This event marks Ms.
Tate’s first official foray into the cabaret genre after over a decade
of performing on the nightclub drag circuit in New York. Bringing
together the music... of Stephen Sondheim, Charles Strouse, Kander & Ebb
and others, Ms. Tate seeks to delve a bit into the nature of identity
and acceptance. This subject matter is particularly salient to her as
a “faux-queen” – a biological and self-identified female working in a
traditionally male idiom.
In a recent article, BUST magazine praised Ms. Tate’s “fierce skill”
as a vocalist and went on to say that she is “so perfectly feminine,
in fact, that it’s almost hard to believe that she is a real woman.”
“Take Me As I Am” is somewhat a departure from Ms. Tate’s more recent
performances, ranging from calling Bingo at a Greenwich Village bar &
grill to playing a neurotic cruise ship captain in the NYC
International Fringe Festival to providing the only biologically
female talent at the 2008 Miss NYC for Female Impersonators Pageant.
“Take Me As I Am” will be presented at The Duplex Cabaret Theatre, 61
Christopher Street, on 10/9 & 10/16 at 7:00 pm. Running time is 55
minutes. There is a $15 cover charge and a two-drink minimum. [$10
